Position Overview and Responsibilities:
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Office of General Counsel, in Tallahassee is seeking to fill an attorney position in the Waste and Emergency Response Unit of the Office of General Counsel. This position is mainly transactional and will also focus on advising DEP’s Division of Waste Management (DWM) and six District offices on one or a combination of program areas including, but not limited to, solid waste, RCRA, CERCLA, dry cleaning solvent cleanup, petroleum restoration, storage tanks, emergency response, site investigation, waste cleanup, federal facilities, or brownfields. Examples of work projects include all phases of rulemaking and reviewing large documents for legal sufficiency across multiple statutes (DEP and non-DEP) and rules.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of and comfortable with computers and business software such as Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint and SharePoint).
- A willingness to actively participate, communicate and collaborate with team members, gage legal risk, provide proactive guidance, respond to client and co-worker queries, and timely and effectively resolve issues.
- Ability to handle high volume in a fast-paced environment with quality and accuracy while being self-motivated and organized.
- Ability to conduct legal research on issues including but not limited to administrative law and procedure, and state rules regarding waste management and contaminated site cleanup. Which is to include proficiency with online research tools such as Westlaw and Lexis Nexis.
- Excellent communication and critical thinking skills.
- Strategic client management skills.
- Positive attitude, a willingness to learn applicable scientific terminology, and expand your knowledge in broad and new areas.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be a Member of Good Standing with the Florida Bar and possess a valid Driver’s License.
Position of Special Trust Requirement:
These positions are designated as Positions of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Preference is for a detail and solution-oriented individual who possess practical critical thinking skills.
- Experience as a practicing environmental or real estate law attorney.
Pay : Salary will be commensurate with years of legal experience.
