Registered Nurse (RN) - PACU/Recovery - Days

Perioperative Services is composed of Pre‑Admission Testing, Preop (16 bays), Operating Room (3 OR rooms and a C‑Section room), Special Procedures (3 procedure rooms), PACU/Recovery area (9 bays), and Central Sterile (instrument processing). We provide surgical procedures for cardiovascular, ENT, general, GI, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, pain management, pulmonology, and urology. We see about 350 patients a month and value teamwork, personal and professional growth, and clinical ladder advancement. Monday – Friday: four ten‑hour shifts plus rotating call. Call Requirements First call: 7 times in a 13‑week period, including one weekend of first call. Backup call: 7 times in a 13‑week period, including one weekend of backup call. Holidays: one first call and one backup call; some holidays may be off. Clinical Nurse I Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family. Assists the health‑care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. Provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions. Clinical Nurse II Demonstrates a mastery of clinical skills and applies knowledge to a specific patient population. Recognises changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. Mobilises resources to meet the individualized needs of patients and families. Provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level. Delivers and documents direct, age‑specific care as described for the Clinical Nurse I, and safely administers prescribed medications. Clinical Nurse III Demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies knowledge to a specific patient population. Anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. Serves as a role model, provides direction, education, and leads clinical teams. Delivers and documents direct, age‑specific care and safely administers prescribed medications. Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements Clin I, II, III: Current RN licence in Virginia or an eligible compact state. Experience Required: Clin I: N/A Clin II: 12–24 months RN experience Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience Preferred: Clin I: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute‑care setting. Clin II & III: Academic health‑care experience; similar patient population experience in an acute‑care setting. Education / Training Required: Clin I, II, III: Diploma or associate’s degree from a professional nursing program recognised and/or approved by the state board of nursing. All RNs without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of start date and complete it within five years unless grandfathered. Preferred: Clin I, II, III: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program. Clin III: Certification in a specialty area. Independent Actions Required Follow documented physician/licensed independent provider orders. Practice within the boundaries of nursing regulations in Virginia. Guide practice by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and national standards. Follow VCUHS policies, procedures, and established practice. Supervisory Responsibilities Organise work, delegate, and supervise others (RNs, LPNs, care partners, unit secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments. Additional Position Requirements Clin I, II, III: Work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays. Schedules will be established with the Nurse Manager/Practice Manager and may adjust to meet unit requirements. Physical Requirements Lifting: 20–50 lbs. Exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances. Prolonged standing, sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing steps/ladder, reaching overhead, repetitive motions. Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speaking, legible writing, reading, logical thinking.
