Maintenance Mechanic Level 4 (2nd Shift)

Location: San Leandro, California, United States of America Shift SHIFT: Second shift 1:00 pm – 9:30 pm TRAINING SHIFT: Day shift 5:00 am – 1:30 pm General Purpose Under general supervision, performs mechanical tasks in the maintenance of plant and office facilities in accordance with quality standards. Maintains facilities and work areas in a neat, orderly, and sanitary condition while ensuring time and material are properly recorded. Objective To set up and maintain all plant equipment so production and safety standards are met. Supports all maintenance tasks and participates in preventive maintenance (PM) operations to eliminate production downtime. Essential Functions Follow established housekeeping and safety practices to maintain the quality of the work environment. Document all departmental paperwork in fine detail and explain the logic of all phases. Log on the main computer system, extract information, and record time. Adjust equipment to obtain optimum running condition. Disassemble equipment to determine extent of repair and approximate cost, and determine the best repair solution. Work from written and/or verbal instructions, wiring and circuit diagrams, installation and construction blueprints, electrical handbooks and charts, and in accordance with applicable codes and ordinances. Maintain buildings, facilities, and equipment requiring a good knowledge of general trade fundamentals. Coordinate repairs with Department Supervisors to minimize production downtime. Maintain spare parts and hardware items in an organized manner. Keep an orderly and neat shop and storage area. Repair windows, doors, roofs, floors, and stairways as part of building maintenance. Repair hand tools, fixtures, powered tools, and miscellaneous equipment. Lubricate production, tool, and facility equipment following established lubrication schedules, procedures, and materials. Document, record, and maintain files of work performed on machinery. Pick up requisitioned parts and materials from local suppliers and vendors as needed. Review own work for completeness and quality workmanship standards. Display willingness and interest to learn through on-the-job training and pursue continuing formal education in areas of operation (Electrical, Pneumatic, Hydraulic, etc.). Know and understand all general plant and department safety/quality rules and policies. Demonstrate proper procedures for signing off work orders and preventative maintenance sheets. Use standard tools such as benders, wire pullers, knockout cutters, hole saws, power saws, drill motors, etc. Understand operation and theory of ARC and MIG welding; be able to join parts adequately. Understand operation and theory of Gas Welding and Cutting; set up equipment and perform cuts and welds. Understand electrical theory and practice including 3‑phase 480 V wiring and troubleshooting. Know Delta and Wye circuits. Run distribution wiring and conduit for lighting and equipment, including disconnects and motor starters. Have basic knowledge of electronic circuits. Follow diagrams to join pipes without leaks, fitting flared or compress tubing, and using manual or machine threading equipment. Use the online computer system to perform assigned tasks. Maintain equipment to meet all production and quality standards. Perform all work necessary to achieve plant goals. Carry out operational tests using instruments such as voltmeters, ammeters, wattmeters, and ohmmeters. Remove and install motors following basic drawings and simple schematics. Update all electrical drawings. Determine proper wire, fuse, motor starter, and breaker sizes. Troubleshoot problems with motors and standard electrical equipment. Understand and repair pneumatic and hydraulic power units, rebuild cylinders and valves. Read and understand blueprints and sketches for accurate equipment adjustments. Install conduit, wire, panels, switches, control fixtures, and electrical equipment. Diagnose deficiencies in electrical equipment, transformers, fixtures, and control panels, and determine the best repair method. Modify and maintain electrical connections between outlets, pull boxes, breaker panels, and test for continuity and proper connection. Make cost analyses for decision‑making and exercise good judgment. Understand different types of atmospheric and pressure burner systems, gas safety devices, and heating systems. Operate a wide variety of meters, scopes, leak detectors, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment. Use power hand tools and familiarize with computer‑assisted drawing programs. Operate welding, cutting torch, plasma torch, pipe bender, pipe cutter/threader, hand grinders, and related equipment. Operate rented equipment not normally in plant. Use lifting devices such as lift tables, cranes, and forklifts. Perform all other duties as assigned. Other General Responsibilities Train less skilled personnel as assigned. Perform all work required to achieve plant goals. Training & Qualifications Training: HAZ‑MAT, Electrical Safety, Arc Flash Safety, PPE, LO/TO, Robotic Safety, Confined Space, Hot Work, Outside Contractor Safety, Spill Response, Cryogenics, X‑Ray Safety, Blood‑borne Pathogen, Pulmonary Fibrosis, and other safety training related to plant operations. Specified training on Hepatitis and opportunity for free vaccination if desired. Training may be documented by verbal, written, or practical testing; experience and/or training may be considered. Ability to read, write legibly, and follow verbal and written instructions; normally requires completion of high school. Thorough knowledge and understanding of mechanical theory and shop practices. Effective communication skills in English, both verbally and in writing. Physical ability to perform essential job functions. Minimum two years of vocational or trade school education, or equivalent on‑the‑job experience. Minimum two years of progressive experience in plumbing, electrical maintenance, fabrication, carpentry, millwright, hydraulic, heating and cooling systems, and related maintenance activities. Pay & Benefits For informational purposes only, the range of pay for this role is $34.75 to $43.50 USD hourly.
