Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Emergency Duration: 23 weeks Shift: Day/Night variable shift (3x12s) Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Two years acute hospital experience, one year emergency department experience License: Current Registered Nurse Licensure Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification Must-Have: - Minimum of two years experience as a Registered Nurse, with at least one year in an emergency department environment - Current certifications in BLS, ACLS, PALS, and Stroke Certification Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical skills, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care. The ED RN applies appropriate interventions and evaluates patient progress. The ED RN demonstrates skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions. These interventions are appropriate to manage life-threatening and routine emergency situations. The ED RN utilizes principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain, discomfort, and safety concerns. He/She assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, as well as their families and support systems. The ED RN connects with patients and families during triage and identifies initial management of patients, assigning priorities of care accordingly. The ED RN establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, and assesses nonverbal communication while providing frequent updates. The ED RN conducts primary assessments of critical needs and documents any major deviations from the norm for all age groups. He/She correctly identifies necessary steps or interventions required based on assessments. The ED RN uses direct observation, patient/family interviews, and data to conduct secondary assessments. He/She identifies contributing factors, health history, events, or activities preceding the emergent health event. The ED RN assesses the psychosocial needs of individuals, including family dynamics, and documents any concerns regarding domestic violence or abuse. He/She re-assesses the patient to identify responses to treatment and/or changes in condition, responding appropriately. The ED RN fosters mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. He/She teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with individual training and scope of practice. The ED RN understands the need to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. He/She prepares patients and families for diagnostic procedures and treatments and makes appropriate referrals for post-emergency care. The ED RN teaches patients what is needed for continued care and healing at home. He/She assesses patient/family learning styles and structures education sessions to maximize understanding. The ED RN asks questions to evaluate the retention of key points in education and discharge instructions. He/She seeks to understand what is most important to the patient and family. The ED RN acknowledges that the patient and family are the central focus of all care and services. He/She embraces the creation of a Healing Environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. The ED RN keeps patients and significant others informed of care processes and anticipates patient/family needs. He/She maintains awareness of the patient's condition throughout the emergency department visit and updates communication boards as necessary.
