Medical AssistantUnder general supervision from the Medical Assistant Supervisor, the Medical Assistant works interdependently with other healthcare professionals to provide quality health care to community members. Administrative: Tasks involving non-clinical work to be performed by a Medical Assistant includes:Answering phones and scheduling appointmentsGreeting patients, completion of forms, giving instructions to patientsFiling and maintaining medical and/or financial recordsPreparing correspondenceProcessing mailPurchasing and maintaining medical supply inventoryCommunication with appropriate use of medical terminology2. Clinical: Tasks that only a Medical Assistant can perform on behalf of the Salt River Clinic.Measuring and recording vital signsRecording patient interview, medical history and chief complaintProviding patient education with regard to office policies, medications, disease management, home treatment and special dietary needs/restrictionsPreparing patients for examinations, and performing routine screening testsAssist the physician with exams and minor office surgeryPhlebotomy and collection of other lab specimensPerforming basic lab testsPerforming EKGsCalling prescriptions to the pharmacyArranging for hospital admissions and outside referrals for physiciansPreparing and administering medications with physician's authorizationsChange dressings, applying bandages, removing sutures and other first aid proceduresUse of BLS techniques, when requiredMaintain stocking and sterilizing instrumentsPracticing OSHA safety standardsDisposing of Biohazard waste according to OSHA standardsPerforming accurate, legal and ethical documentation at all times3. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions, history and government of the Salt River Pima- Maricopa Indian Community.Knowledge of regulatory standards of medical assistants in an ambulatory clinic setting.Skill in working as a part of an integrated team.Ability to provide compassionate care to community members during stressful situations.Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with healthcare personnel in order to provide quality care.Ability to meet and comply with HIPAA/Confidentiality policies and procedures and ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive patient information.Ability to use excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writingAbility to manage multiple and diverse people and tasks in stressful situations.Ability to work independently, take initiative and use good judgment.Minimum QualificationsEducation: High school diploma or GED required; 2-year technical, vocational or college degree preferred.Must possess a valid certificate of completion from an accredited Medical Assistant program.Must become a Certified Medical Assistant within the first year of employmentMust possess a CPR/Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.Experience: Minimum of 1-year previous patient care experience in an ambulatory or primary care clinic preferred.1-year full-time work experience performing administrative tasks required.Equivalency - Any equivalent combination of experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filling the position.Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, UnderfillSpecial RequirementsMay be required to work beyond normal work hours including nights, weekends and holidays.Employees in, and applicants applying for, jobs providing direct services to children are subject to the "Community Code of Ordinances", Chapter 11, "Minors", Article X.
