General Job Description The Director of Human Resources provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all human resources functions across the charter school network. As a key member of the Network Support Office leadership team, this position develops and implements human capital strategies that attract, develop, engage, and retain high-quality educators and staff committed to the network's mission of student success. The Director of Human Resources partners closely with school leaders and central office departments to ensure compliance with employment laws, support employee growth and engagement, strengthen organizational culture, and build systems that enable schools to focus on teaching and learning. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Strategic Human Capital Leadership Develop and implement a comprehensive human resources strategy aligned with the network's mission, strategic plan, and growth objectives. Serve as a trusted advisor to the Chief Executive Officer, executive leadership team, and school leaders on all human resources matters. Lead workforce planning initiatives to support school openings, expansion, and organizational sustainability. Develop and monitor HR goals, metrics, and key performance indicators to drive continuous improvement. Talent Acquisition and Staffing Oversee recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention strategies for teachers, school leaders, and network support staff. Develop partnerships with colleges, universities, educator preparation programs, and community organizations to build strong talent pipelines. Ensure hiring practices reflect the network's commitment to equity, diversity, and excellence. Support principals and hiring managers throughout the recruitment and selection process. Employee Relations and Organizational Culture Foster a positive, inclusive, and mission-driven organizational culture. Provide guidance to supervisors on employee performance, coaching, conflict resolution, corrective action, and investigations. Promote practices that support employee well-being and professional growth. Performance Management and Professional Development Partner with leadership to develop, implement, and continuously improve performance evaluation systems for Network Office and instructional staff, ensuring alignment, consistency, and organizational excellence. Support leadership development, succession planning, and talent management initiatives. Coordinate HR-related professional learning for school administrators and supervisors. Develop resources and training that promote effective supervision and employee development. Compensation, Benefits, and HR Operations Oversee compensation administration, salary schedules, employee benefits, leave administration, and HRIS systems. Conduct market analyses and recommend compensation strategies that support recruitment and retention. Ensure accurate personnel records, employment agreements and position assignments, and HR documentation. Manage and Administer Health & Welfare benefits, including overseeing Open Enrollment, retirements plans (CalSTRs, CalPERs and 403(b)) Compliance and Risk Management Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, charter school regulations, and board policies. Maintain and update employee handbooks, personnel policies, and administrative procedures. Oversee employee investigations, workplace accommodations, leave administration, and compliance reporting. Coordinate background checks, credential verification, and required employment clearances. Partner with legal counsel as needed on employment-related matters. Leadership and Team Management Promote a collaborative, customer-service-oriented HR department that provides responsive support to schools and departments. Utilize data and analytics to identify workforce trends and inform strategic decision-making. Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance HR systems and processes. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, Education, or a related field. Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible human resources experience, including leadership and supervisory responsibilities. Experience managing employee relations, talent acquisition, performance management, and employment law compliance. Knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations. Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders. Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Preferred Master's degree in Human Resources, Educational Leadership, Business Administration, or a related field. SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP, SPHR, PHR, or comparable HR certification. Experience in K-12 education, charter schools, or nonprofit organizations. Familiarity with educator credentialing, school staffing, and education-related employment regulations. Experience implementing HR technology and data management systems. Developing equitable hiring practices and cultivating a mission-driven organizational culture. Working Conditions Hybrid position based in Los Angeles, with occasional travel to Value Schools campuses. Occasional evening or weekend work to support hiring events, board meetings, or organizational initiatives. Ability to use standard office technology and travel between school sites as needed.
