Position Statement: The Speech-Language Pathologist is a member of a multidisciplinary team that provides special education services to preschoolers with disabilities. The Speech-Language Pathologist role includes the assessment, treatment planning, and provision of direct services to address the speech, language, communication and swallowing needs of individuals and groups, as well as consultation and evaluation as needed. This person provides therapy services according to individualized education programs (IEPs) in accordance with New York State regulations.
Responsibilities:
- Plan and implement therapeutic speech-language services on an individual or group basis.
- Maintain contemporaneous session notes for all therapy sessions provided in accordance with student IEPs, per the guidance of the New York State Preschool/School Supportive Health Services Program (SSHSP).
- Provide evaluations for children, including but not limited to speech production, speech and language development, feeding, and oral-motor development.
- Act as a consultant for teachers and support staff regarding classroom speech-language interventions for individual children, and also consult with staff regarding the enhancement of speech-language development for those children not seen for treatment.
- Develop professional, positive, and productive relationships with children, families, agency staff, visitors, outside agencies, and the general public.
- Express a supportive and caring demeanor to relate sensitively to children, families, teaching staff, and multidisciplinary providers.
- Provide written documentation on students requiring therapeutic intervention, including assessment results, treatment goals, data tracking, and recommendations for present and future services.
- Attend CPSE and/or CSE meetings to determine appropriate programming for children.
- Participate in team meetings concerning diagnostic and treatment needs of specific children.
- Evaluate needs for assistive technology for communication, including making referrals, conducting device trials, and writing justifications when appropriate.
- Provide regular feedback, information, and support for parents, including at minimum yearly conferences to discuss developmental progress.
- Review IEPs for all children on the caseload, and provide written updates for regular progress reporting and for annual reviews.
- Provide input for ordering and maintenance of materials and equipment utilized in therapy.
- Attend training/conferences for professional development and to meet continuing education requirements for licensure.
- Adhere to all scope of practice standards pertaining to the field of Speech-Language Pathology in New York State.

- Experience with children with a variety of developmental delays, including but not limited to Apraxia, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, and Sensory Integration concerns.

- Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Required Education and Experience:
- Master's degree in speech-language pathology from a New York State registered licensure qualifying program, a program accredited by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA), or the equivalent.
- Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
- New York State Education Department Speech-Language Pathology License.
- American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) certification.
Essential Job Qualifications:
- Ability to lift 50 pounds without assistance.
- Ability to sit, squat, crouch and stand for elongated periods of time.
- Ability to lift arms over head in upward reaching motion.
- Ability to walk up and downstairs up to several times per day.
