Purpose Statement: The Staff Accountant position exists to provide support to Financial Services with main responsibilities for Fixed Assets and Capital Construction accounting functions, including reconciliations, journal entries, general ledger analysis/research, reimbursements and inventory. The Staff Accountant will need to apply accounting theory and principles, recommend accounting policy and procedural changes, and ensure observance of professional standards and state rules including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards, Higher Education Accounting Standards, State Fiscal Rules, CCCS and College procedures, and financial aid and other grant rules, regulations, and guidance. Reports to: Assistant Controller Supervises: No supervision Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or Associates degree plus two years of professional level experience in Accounting. Preferred Qualifications: Experience preparing journal entries. Experience with financial reporting systems. Related experience in a higher education setting or non-profit or public fund accounting experience. Duties & Responsibilities: Fixed Assets: Record all Fixed Asset additions, disposals, and transfers. Prepare journal entries to record all capitalized purchases on the Banner Fixed Asset Module. Follow capitalization criteria established by the College, Colorado Community College System, State of Colorado and GAAP. Run monthly depreciation process and ensure that amounts are accurate. Tag all new assets acquired by the College. Maintain all records, including purchase orders and invoices, for capitalized items. Work with Purchasing Office to ensure correct account coding. Maintain Finance Inventory System. Reconcile Finance Inventory System to Banner Fixed Asset Module to Banner General Ledger as required. Coordinate and perform annual physical inventory of equipment at all campuses. Work with campus personnel to resolve inventory questions or discrepancies. Assists with the additions and disposals of all equipment by coordinating with Assistant Controller, Facilities Department, and Information Technology Department. Capital Construction: Recommend and complete requests for new project coding in Banner. Maintain detailed information for all construction projects. Prepare and enter payment requests on all State funded capital construction projects and the corresponding journal entries to the appropriate project coding in Banner. Work with Capital Projects Department to ensure that all expenditures are correctly coded. Reconcile College and State project information, including budget, encumbrances, retainage, and actual expenses. Ensure proper Construction in Process (CIP) recognition. Accurately close projects upon completion and capitalize in Banner. Year-end Closing Process and Annual Financial Audit: Prepare all required journal entries, footnotes, exhibits and schedules during year-end closing process. Compile required information during annual financial audit. Other: College projects, committees, and other strategic tasks as assigned. Generate required department reports periodically. Work independently as well as work in a team setting. Attend various department and college wide meetings as scheduled. Communicate effectively in verbal and written formats. Ability to identify and implement imaginative and entrepreneurial solutions to complex problems.
