The primary purpose and function of the Shift Lead is to perform the duties of a CSC and/or veterinary assistant/technician, as well as provide continuity and operational support across all shifts, ensuring that the hospital always has leadership onsite to support associates and clients. The Shift Lead will help coordinate and guide the paraprofessional staff and support hospital leadership in maximizing the productivity and profitability of the hospital. This position will work with the Practice Manager and/or Chief of Staff (COS) to help ensure effective communication with clients, associates, Field Leadership, Central Team Support, and PetSmart.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
The ratio of time spent on leadership duties and paraprofessional responsibilities will vary depending on the hospital situation; the Shift Lead must use good judgment in prioritizing their duties on any given day, ensuring hospital productivity. On average, the ratio is expected to be about 20% leadership duties (primarily when the Practice Manager and/or Chief of Staff are not present) and 80% paraprofessional duties. Paraprofessional Responsibilities (approximately 80% of time) Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. Perform the duties of a CSC and/or veterinary assistant/technician, which may include recruiting new clients by promoting hospital services; routing the flow of clients and pets to ensure superior client care and maximum productivity; maximizing the number of pets seen; providing professional, efficient and exceptional service; encouraging hospital visits; welcoming clients; ensuring comfort; educating them about pet's health; performing or preparing procedures; completing preparatory work; monitoring hospitalized or surgical pets. Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventative care, pet health needs and hospital services. Assist incoming clients by completing required documentation, entering pet information, using collars and tags, ensuring prompt service. Assist outgoing clients by providing instructions, invoices, dispensing prescriptions, selling retail products, scheduling appointments. Manage finances by maintaining accurate balances and proper opening/closing procedures. Act as extra support for veterinarian and technician to ensure high quality care and productivity. Obtain relevant information and history from clients and maintain complete medical charts. Ensure safety of pets, clients and associates through safe restraining techniques, standard protocols, and clean, sterile, organized areas. Assist with surgery as applicable; use technical skills within state practice acts. Conduct administrative functions as needed. Leadership Responsibilities (approximately 20% of time) Assist Practice Manager in developing an efficient, productive team and building company culture. Support hospital labor management, adjust schedules, assist in training and supervision of paraprofessional team. Provide professional, efficient client service and resolve client issues. Assist in creating quality environment and fostering associate engagement. Ensure adherence to dress guidelines and hospital prep for surgery. Prepare cases for team, triage treatment board, coordinate transfers. Identify bottlenecks and propose solutions. Consult field leadership on client resolution decisions. Train and mentor new associates. Perform quality checks on records, medications, and hospital cleanliness. Address equipment issues, assist inventory management. Confidence around pets (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, etc.). Workload may exceed 40 hours per week; requires weekends and evenings. Moderately high noise level. Ability to carry out written/oral instructions and solve problems. Ambulatory skills sufficient to perform duties and visit locations. Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb; lift up to 50 pounds. Good hand‑eye coordination, dexterity, visual acuity. Exposure to pets, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, medication.JP EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING
Associate’s degree or veterinary technician certification/licensure preferred. Two years experience required; six months at Banfield preferred. Prior supervisory experience preferred.
