Controls Engineer

The successful candidate will join the Facility Operations Directorate to support the Center Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering Contract (CMOE) located at NASA Langley Research Center. This position reports directly to the Ground Data Systems Service, Hardware Supervisor. Responsibilities Provide controls services to the wind tunnels and research facilities at NASA Langley, including troubleshooting, repair, replacement, programming, configuration, documentation, and checkout of control systems and components. Execute break‑fix services and participate in control‑related projects for improvements, added functions, or new capabilities. Plan projects, write specifications, estimate budgets and schedules, perform system design, develop graphical user interfaces, program, layout equipment, procure items, configure systems, and review drawings. Conduct system checkout, equipment configuration, troubleshooting, repair, and operation, producing clear documentation. Coordinate with team members, internal service providers, subcontractors, facility operational staff, and NASA clients; conduct meetings and reviews to communicate project goals and objectives. Simultaneously manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment with frequently changing priorities. Qualifications U.S. citizenship required. BS degree from an ABET‑accredited engineering school. At least five (5) years of practical work experience in controls, electronics, data acquisition systems, or similar roles. Academic background in electronics, mechanical systems, controls theory, manufacturing, or aerodynamics desired. Mechanical or electrical engineering preferred. Experience with Allen‑Bradley and Rockwell software process controllers. Experience with general programming techniques. Experience in an industrial, laboratory, or manufacturing facility desired. Experience in system design, equipment installation, and system startup desired. Experience securing industrial networking systems is a plus. Experience with hydraulics is a plus. Essential Functions & Physical Requirements Work Environment: Office or control room; travel between facilities and test sites on the Center; project implementations or troubleshooting events in industrial or laboratory environments. Exposure to high voltage, high noise levels, hazardous propellants, explosives, chemicals, and industrial facilities; appropriate PPE and training provided. Mobility needed to enter wind tunnel and test facility areas, including confined spaces; ability to crawl, climb, and lift up to 35 lbs. Must walk, stand, bend, twist, and sit for extended periods. Software & Hardware Tools Software: PLC Ladder Logic and other IEC61131‑3 languages, FactoryTalk View, LabVIEW, C/C++, MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Visio), AutoCAD or equivalent, MATLAB/Simulink. Hardware Platforms: Microsoft PC, Linux, National Instruments, Allen‑Bradley PLCs (PLC‑5, SLC, CompactLogix, ControlLogix), Allen‑Bradley PanelViews, AB/ABB Drives. Field Devices: programmable controllers; pneumatic valves; programmable valves; standalone PID loop controllers; Flex‑IO. Communications Protocols: TCP/IP, RS‑232, IEEE‑488, OPCUA. Attendance & Travel Regular attendance mandatory (100%). Overtime/work outside normal schedule required ( Travel required (5%).
