Description: The Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery is responsible for the provision of direct patient care to a designated group of patients. This position will collaborate with unit leadership to follow the scope of practice for nursing governing bodies. Responsibilities include observation, data collection, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patients' physical, psychological, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs. The nurse assesses patients and families whose needs range from uncomplicated to highly complex. They quickly recognize normal parameters, deviations, and abnormalities based on clinical experience. A person-centered care approach is used in the development of care plans and in prioritizing nursing care. The nurse plans for the care of patients, demonstrating the ability to effectively prioritize both expected and unanticipated needs. Patients and families are involved in establishing care goals. Critical thinking skills are demonstrated by making appropriate clinical decisions and proactively addressing potential problems. Competence in the implementation of technical skills required for patient care is essential. The nurse remains current on policies, procedures, and standards and acts as a resource to peers. Interventions reflect resourceful involvement of health team members in attaining care goals. The nurse facilitates connections for patients and families with other disciplines and services as needed. Floating is expected on a rotational basis to other hospital departments. Scheduling is based on unit needs, with flexibility required for various shifts. Block scheduling may be considered upon request, but is not guaranteed.
