Machine Learning Engineer II

Responsibilities

• Execute responsible AI projects that identify, avoid, and mitigate bias across Pinterest machine learning applications, including generative AI.
• Collaborate with Trust and Safety, User Modeling, and Content Understanding engineering teams to adopt and evaluate responsible AI practices and machine learning fairness tooling.
• Mentor junior engineers on the Responsible AI team and across Pinterest.
• Work with the team and senior leaders to define and drive technical strategy for responsible AI.
• Measure, deploy, and refine fairness interventions and responsible AI solutions at scale.

Requirements

• Extensive real-world experience applying advanced machine learning methods to production systems and a strong track record in responsible technology, fairness, ethics, and societal considerations.
• Deep familiarity with transformer-based models, two-tower architectures, LLMs, and their applications in large-scale search and recommender systems.
• Proven ability to measure, deploy, and refine fairness interventions and responsible AI solutions at scale.
• At least 2 years of experience on engineering teams building large-scale ML-driven user-facing products.
• Master’s or PhD in computer science or a related field.
• Preferred: publications at top machine learning conferences.
• Preferred: experience with Cursor, Copilot, Codex, or similar AI coding assistants.
• Preferred: familiarity with LLM-powered productivity tools for documentation search, experiment analysis, SQL/data exploration, and engineering workflow acceleration.
• Preferred: expertise in scalable real-time systems that process stream data and passion for applied research and the Pinterest product.
