Job Description

The primary role of a Phlebotomist II is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This position is integral to ensuring efficient and accurate specimen collection and processing.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge specimens.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination.
• Update patient information and collect/store specimens according to established procedures.
• Explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously to patients.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Understand and follow all physicians' orders accurately.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
• Check test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.
• Follow procedures to maintain the integrity of specimens during transport.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend annual department training.
• Answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
• Primarily work with adults and geriatric patients.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a phlebotomist.
• Experience in pediatric to geriatric blood draws, including heel sticks on babies.
• Proficiency in straight needle blood drawing.
• Ability to handle 30-40 draws per shift independently.
• Critical thinking skills and excellent customer service.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with processing specimens after drawing.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Valid Driver's License and reliable means of transportation.

Work Environment

The position involves traveling to various clinic sites in a float position, covering locations such as Merrillville, Valparaiso, Wheatfield, and others in Indiana. Training will occur during the first two weeks. The work schedule requires availability Monday to Friday from 6 am to 7:30 pm with rotating Saturdays from 8 am to 12 pm or 9 am to 1 pm. When scheduled for a Saturday shift, a day off during the week will be provided. Saturday shifts occur roughly once per month. Mileage reimbursement is provided at $0.77 per mile.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Itasca, IL.

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Itasca,IL.
