Principal Research Scientist II, Process Chemistry
AbbVie
Principal Research Scientist II leading process chemistry research and development for active pharmaceutical ingredients across multiple modalities. The role focuses on catalytic process innovation, leveraging AI/ML and high-throughput experimentation, with responsibility for scientific leadership and team mentorship in a matrix environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead strategy development and implementation for complex synthetic problems using catalytic methods
- Identify and design chemical catalysts for novel or improved API synthetic transformations
- Apply AI/ML tools and high-throughput experimentation to accelerate reaction screening and optimization
- Lead cross-functional project teams for process development across small molecules, peptides, and antibody-drug conjugates
- Mentor scientists, direct project strategies, and author technical reports, patents, and regulatory documents
Requirements
- Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in organic chemistry with 16+, 14+, or 8+ years experience respectively
- Deep expertise in synthetic organic chemistry with demonstrated hands-on catalysis experience
- Experience with high-throughput experimentation platforms and data analysis workflows
- Proven track record as scientific leader with strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated innovation in chemical and automation technologies
- Experience in synthetic molecule process development and external scientific publications
- Proven people management experience and established industry leadership in catalysis
