We provide programs and services tailored to the needs of today’s youth while complementing the efforts of families, schools, and other community-based organizations. BGCO currently serves nearly 2,000 youth across three Clubhouse locations in Oakland, providing outcome-driven programming in three key areas: Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles. Job Summary The Director of Finance is a key member of BGCO’s leadership team and is responsible for the overall financial management, reporting, and integrity of the organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Finance provides strategic financial leadership, ensures strong fiscal controls, and supports the Board of Directors in fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities. This role oversees all accounting, budgeting, audit, and financial compliance functions to ensure BGCO’s resources are stewarded effectively in support of youth‑serving programs. Primary Responsibilities Financial Strategy and Leadership Serve as the CEO’s primary advisor on financial strategy, risks, and opportunities. Develop multi‑year financial forecasts and scenario plans aligned with BGCO’s strategic plan and programmatic growth. Present clear, actionable financial analysis and recommendations to the CEO, finance committee, and Board of Directors. Partner with the CEO and leadership team to evaluate new initiatives, capital projects, and program expansions from a financial perspective. Accounting, Reporting, and Controls Oversee all day‑to‑day accounting functions, including general ledger, A/P, A/R, payroll, bank reconciliations, and month‑end close. Produce timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit best practices. Maintain and continuously improve internal controls, financial policies, and procedures to safeguard assets and ensure data integrity. Manage the annual audit and preparation of the Form 990, working closely with external auditors and advisors. Budgeting and Forecasting Lead the annual organizational budgeting process in collaboration with the CEO, senior leadership, and program managers. Prepare and monitor budgets for specific sites, programs, and grants, ensuring alignment with funder requirements and organizational priorities. Track performance against budget, analyze variances, and provide clear explanations and corrective recommendations. Develop rolling forecasts and cash‑flow projections to support proactive decision‑making. Cash Management, Banking, and Risk Oversee cash management, banking relationships, and investment accounts in accordance with BGCO policies. Monitor cash flow to ensure adequate liquidity for operations and capital needs. Support the CEO and Board in assessing financial risks and implementing risk‑mitigation strategies (e.g., reserves, insurance, internal controls). Ensure compliance with debt covenants and reporting requirements, if applicable. Grants, Contracts, and Compliance Partner with development and program teams to develop grant and contract budgets and to ensure spending aligns with restrictions and deliverables. Track restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring accurate allocation of revenues and expenses. Oversee financial reporting to government agencies, foundations, and other funders, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations, including charitable registration and nonprofit financial reporting standards. Systems, Processes, and Team Leadership Oversee financial systems (e.g., accounting software, payroll system, expense management) and lead efforts to streamline and modernize processes. Establish and maintain standard operating procedures for finance that are clear, documented, and consistently followed. Supervise, mentor, and develop finance staff and any outsourced accounting partners, fostering a culture of accountability, accuracy, and customer service to internal stakeholders. Provide training and support to program and administrative staff on budgeting, purchasing, and financial policies. Board and Stakeholder Relations Serve as staff lead to the Finance Committee and, as needed, the Audit or Investment Committees of the Board. Prepare and present financial reports and materials for Board and committee meetings in a clear, accessible format. Communicate complex financial information in a way that non‑financial stakeholders can understand and use for decision‑making. Qualifications Required Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field. 7+ years of progressively responsible finance/accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership or management role. Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting, including fund accounting, restricted funds, and grant reporting. Demonstrated experience with budgeting, financial analysis, cash‑flow management, and audit coordination. Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar) and advanced Excel skills. Proven track record of strengthening financial systems, processes, and internal controls. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non‑financial staff and Board members. High level of integrity, sound judgment, discretion, and commitment to BGCO’s mission and values. Preferred CPA, MBA, or equivalent advanced credential. Experience managing or transitioning outsourced accounting providers or fractional CFO services. Familiarity with California nonprofit regulations, government contracts, and public funding streams.
