JOB SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Orthopaedic Institute Practice Supervisor and Manager, guided by policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with the clinical staff and the physician leadership, the Hospital Assistant 2 assists in the delivery of care to patients in an ambulatory multi-specialty group practice. Work includes a variety of personal care and nursing procedures including assuring positive care outcomes. They will perform assigned patient care and laboratory procedures in support of the primary and specialty care services provided to patients within the practice. They are required to adhere to the Telephone and House Standards as adopted by the Medical Center. Exemplary customer service is essential.

Clinical

  1. Performs routine clinical functions, including but not limited to vital signs, height and weight.

  2. Assists patients in preparation for exam and/or procedures. Rooming of patients. Prepare room for exam, i.e. pulling up electronic medical records and x-ray studies.

  3. Performs medication reconciliation in prep for provider.

  4. Performs cast application and removal.

  5. Transports patients as directed.

  6. Monitors patient flow in and out of the clinic. Updated tracking board and Expeditor light system (OI).

  7. Obtains specimens and performs simple laboratory procedures as directed.

  8. Performs clinical activities in an accurate and timely manner.

  9. Ensures that x-ray films are available for each patient’s visit.

  10. Assist with the instruction of crutches, canes, and walker ambulation.

  11. Documents all patient care activities, results, patient related communication and enter this information into the medical record as appropriate.

  12. Checks medications supplies for expiration on a monthly basis; discards when expired.

  13. Complies with all Ambulatory Services and Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative and clinical practice. Complies with activities mandated by TJC/Title 22.

  1. Demonstrates courtesy, common sense and follow through in all telephone communications, maintaining the Medical Center Telephone Standards.

  4. Identifies and communicates problems to the nursing staff or appropriate supervisor.

Operations Maintenance

  1. Maintains clean, well-stocked examination rooms. Responsible for ordering and maintaining supplies.
  2. Maintains supply standards as directed by nursing staff or appropriate supervisor.
  3. Adheres to infection control procedures as outlined in the Infection Control Manual.
  4. Adheres to the Ambulatory Services policy and procedures for the cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing of equipment.
  5. Completes refrigerator log per Medical Center Policy.
  6. Ensures that medication cabinets, needles and syringes are locked
  7. Completes AED daily check (where applicable such as OI).

  2. Maintains confidentiality in matters related to patients and staff.

  3. Follows House and Telephone standards as established by Medical Center (e.g., able to state the mission of the organization, greets customers, offers assistance, uses a friendly tone of voice)

  4. Demonstrates ability to work cooperatively with others.

  5. Maintains open communication channels with all members of the health care team.

  6. Communicates well with patients and families.

  7. Knowledgeable about and adheres to all applicable Medical Center and department specific infection control, health and safety policies and procedures, including annual safety training.

  8. Starts work at scheduled time and completes work on time.

  9. Follows guidelines on use of sick and vacation leave.

  10. Complies with dress code, including appropriate identification

  11. Maintains a safe, clean and functional work environment.

  12. Sets appropriate priorities among elements in work duties.

  13. Uses appropriate chain of command when applicable, e.g. problem solving, seeking information.

  14. Orientation and training of new staff.

  15. Cross train to front desk registration and call center.

  16. Covers various pods as a float – sports, Arthroplasty, Trauma, Hand, Foot, Spine and others as designated.

  17. Prepares disability forms.

  18. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Work Environment

  • Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong. Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture.
  • Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility.
  • Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows.
  • Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.
  • Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

  • Ability to work in busy, team-oriented environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal/communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse professional and patient population.
  • Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • Willingness to learn new task.
  • Ability to organize and effectively set priorities.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to the responsibilities of the job.
  • High School Diploma or GED certificate.
  • Prior experience in medical office environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION

  • Medical terminology

  • Graduated from an accredited Medical Assisting program

  • Cast Technician experience. If not, will provide formal training, if skill is needed.

  • Certified Medical Assistant
