Job Details Functional Title: Clinical Laboratory Scientist III Job Title: Medical Technologist III Agency: Dept of State Health Services Department: NBS/Med Screening QI/Test Supp Posting Number: 18675 Closing Date: 07/17/2026 Posting Audience: Internal and External Occupational Category: Life, Physical, and Social Science Salary Range: $4,539.50 - $5,674.38 Pay Frequency: Monthly Salary Group: TEXAS-B-20 Shift: Regular Weekend Day Additional Shift: Days (First) Telework: Not Eligible for Telework Travel: Up to 5% Regular/Temporary: Regular Full Time/Part Time: Full time FLSA Exempt/Non-Exempt: Nonexempt Facility Location: AUSTIN Brief Job Description Under general supervision of the Endocrine (Endos) Screening Group Manager, the Medical Technologist III independently performs highly complex immunofluorometric testing — including Immunoreactive trypsinogen (IRT), 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP), thyroxine (T4), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and galactose 1-phosphate uridyl transferase (GALT) — on high volume neonatal screening specimens. The role serves as an authority on test procedures in the EIA laboratory, participates in maintaining analytic accuracy, and independently prepares and analyzes specimens, performs quality control, evaluates data and work lists, enters and releases results, maintains equipment, and trains personnel. The position requires making significant decisions on test accuracy, following Standard Operating Protocols, and actively participating in the safety program. Supervisors assign a small portion of work for routine instruction. Duties are performed with substantial latitude, adhering to standard protocols, and using scientific knowledge and independent judgment. Work hours may include Saturday and certain holidays as part of a rotating schedule. Essential Job Functions EJF 1: Performs highly complex immunofluorometric IRT, 17-OHP, T4, TSH, and GALT analysis on high volume neonatal screening specimens, completes documentation, identifies delays and atypical results, and consults with upper-level personnel. (20%) EJF 2: Performs high volume sampling of filter paper specimens for all newborn screening tests and standards, determines specimen acceptability, and assigns thyroid unsatisfactory codes. (35%) EJF 3: Evaluates and interprets complex data, releases final results, processes reports related to worklist duties, and uses the Newborn Screening Laboratory Information system. Participates in quality control, proficiency testing, equipment performance documentation, workload tallies, and supply inventory to ensure quality assurance and test performance. (25%) EJF 4: Performs routine and specialized preventive maintenance of complex equipment, identifies problems, troubleshoots, and makes routine adjustments. (15%) EJF 5: Promotes workflow through teamwork, reassigns duties, and communicates abnormal results to maintain clinical coordination. Provides training, complies with safety and operational guidelines, participates in disaster response or COOP activation, and performs additional duties as assigned. Initial Screening Criteria Education: Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; or an associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution. Experience: Preferred but not required: clinical laboratory testing including newborn screening, clinical chemistry, high‑volume workload, complex analysis, or complex laboratory instrumentation.
