Job Description
The Assembly Lead oversees the assembly of aircraft parts and structures, ensuring that components are accurately drilled, filed, reamed, countersunk, dimpled, fastened, fitted, aligned, shimmed, riveted, and bonded in accordance with specifications. This role combines hands-on mechanical assembly work with leadership responsibilities, including coordinating workflow, providing on-the-job training, and upholding safety and quality standards in a fast-paced aerospace manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Assemble aircraft parts and structures with or without jigs and fixtures using drilling, filing, filling, reaming, countersinking, dimpling, fastening, fitting, aligning, shimming, riveting, and bonding techniques.
- Learn, understand, set up, and operate production equipment safely and efficiently.
- Read and interpret basic blueprints, work orders, and specifications to ensure parts are produced to required standards and identify imperfections.
- Use measurement tools such as scales, calipers, and other measuring equipment to verify part integrity and quality.
- Act as an interface between the work center, production personnel, customer service, and other internal departments and work groups as needed.
- Ensure all work activities comply with applicable procedures, work instructions, and customer specifications.
- Assign work to team members in the work center and manage workflow to maintain productivity.
- Enforce behavioral-based safety policies to maintain a safe work environment.
- Provide on-the-job training by using daily work center requirements to teach and reinforce processes, following training guides, manuals, and checklists when available.
- Adjust teaching style and methods to fit individual employee learning styles, skill levels, and pace of learning.
- Collaborate with the supervisor and work team to assign work that supports employee skill development and introduces new skills.
- Assist the supervisor in assessing individual employee skill levels, productivity, and overall work performance.
- Monitor production performance, identify areas for improvement, and take corrective actions as needed.
- Ensure production processes are carried out in accordance with established safety and quality standards.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area and help implement production schedules and workflows.
- Enforce company policies and procedures in a consistent and fair manner.
- Troubleshoot production issues and resolve them in a timely manner to minimize downtime.
- Promote a positive, respectful, and accountable work environment within the team.
- Participate in team meetings, schedule activities, and serve as a safety monitor.
- Lead team meetings, including team-based corrective action meetings, and provide input regarding employee development.
- Support quality policies, mission, and company procedures by contributing to total customer satisfaction, quality products and services, lean processes, continuous improvement, on-time delivery, safety, teamwork, individual accountability, and respect for people.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- At least 1 year of leadership experience in a production or manufacturing setting.
- At least 2 years of experience in a production or manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical assembly, including drilling, riveting, and bonding of parts.
- Knowledge of production processes and equipment in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints, work orders, and specifications.
- Ability to identify imperfections in parts and ensure adherence to quality standards.
- Proficiency using measurement tools such as scales, calipers, and other measuring equipment.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
- Effective problem-solving skills and sound judgment in addressing production issues.
- Clear and professional communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of work.
- Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related software.
- Commitment to safety, continuous improvement, and quality standards.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in aerospace manufacturing or a similar precision production environment.
- Demonstrated ability to provide on-the-job training and coach team members with different learning styles.
- Experience leading team meetings and participating in corrective action initiatives.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement practices.
- Ability to enforce policies and procedures in a consistent and fair manner.
- Capability to monitor production metrics and implement improvements.
- Physical ability to bend, twist, stretch arms above the head, and walk or stand for long periods of time.
- Ability to push and pull heavy racks safely.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods as required by the role.
- Capacity to occasionally lift and move 10–50 pounds.
- Comfort working in noise levels ranging from quiet to extremely loud.
- Willingness to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including eye, ear, and foot protection, while working on the manufacturing floor.
