Diagnostic Laboratory Services, Inc. (DLS) is Hawaii’s largest locally owned and operated clinical and anatomic pathology laboratory. DLS is proud to serve the communities of Hawaii, Guam and Saipan and utilizes state-of-the-art testing and value-based informatics to promote optimal patient care to positively impact patient lives.

SCHEDULE
Regular Full-Time
Must be available Monday through Friday from 1:00 pm to 10:30 pm, Saturday from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, including occasional holidays.
Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.
HIRING RANGE
$23.83 to $28.23 hourly
Actual pay commensurate with experience
JOB SUMMARY
Performs and assists in surgical grossing, under the guidance of the Coordinator, Anatomic Pathology or assigned staff. Ensures that supplies, equipment and records are maintained in an orderly and efficient manner. Requires accurate collection and processing of samples, operating and maintaining diverse equipment. Ensures diligent analysis and quality results are available to providers and other healthcare professionals. Maintains patient confidentiality, adheres to safety regulations, and stays up to date with laboratory practices. Works with a team with highly skilled and knowledgeable medical laboratory professionals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.Performs surgical specimen examinations, dissections, gross descriptions and dictation. (60%)
Under guidance of Pathologist(s), performs gross examination, description and dissection of surgical specimens.
Gross all simple cases independently.
Performs accessioning.
Performs dictation.
2.Prepares specimens to be transported and/or shipped to appropriate Laboratory for testing. (20%)
Ensures proper International Air Transport Association (IATA) process is completed as required.
Picks up surgical specimens from surgery and ambulatory surgery centers.
Begins initial steps of processing histological specimens.
3.Assists in the preparation and performance of autopsy examinations. (5%)
Prepares for autopsy and checks to confirm body identification.
Positions body, annotates description of body exterior.
Responsible for labeling containers, gathering necessary instrumentation and equipment, and ensuring proper protective clothing is worn for autopsy examination.
Ensures security of viewing patient’s body in accordance with established procedures.
Ensures compliance with Medical Center’s death procedures.
Assures proper restoration of body for release to funeral services; indicates any biohazard such as contagious disease, radioactive implants, etc. which may be present.
Performs proper clean-up of morgue area and assures autopsy specimen storage and/or disposal.
4.Equipment/Instrument/Supply maintenance. (10%)
Maintains a clean, orderly work area and ensures proper maintenance of instruments and equipment, including temperature monitoring.
Maintains adequate inventory of supplies, materials and equipment for grossing, frozen section and morgue areas.
Immediately reports equipment/instrument issues to management.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB DEMANDS
Typical Physical Demands:
Requires manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
Able to distinguish and identify color.
Requires manual manipulation and simple grasping.
Able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, face shields, respirator, etc.
Able to sit up to two (2) hours on a continuously.
Able to type/key up to three (3) hours intermittently.
Operates microtome, tissue processor, computer, telephone, tissue embedder and other necessary laboratory equipment.
Able to talk/dictate up to four (4) hours continuously.
Able to lift, carry, push or pull supplies or equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds occasionally.
Able to lift over fifty (50) pounds with assistance.
Able to reach shoulder level; stoop and bend, twist body occasionally.
Requires travel occasionally.
Typical Working Conditions:
Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases. Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials.
Exposure to fumes from formaldehyde, xylene and alcohol, chemicals, body fluids and communicable diseases.
Generally works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education :
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology OR Associate degree in a chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or education/training as described in CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489(b).

Preferred:
- Experience working in a hospital or reference anatomic pathology laboratory.

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in verbal and written form.
Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team.
Excellent customer service skills.
Exhibit effective decision making with good judgement.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar application.
