Clinical/Medical Laboratory Scientist - American Legion - PRN

Job Responsibilities This position involves receiving and preparing specimens, performing laboratory tests and calculations to support diagnosis and treatment, quality control procedures, evaluating test performance, calibrating and maintaining equipment, performing phlebotomy as appropriate, and maintaining confidentiality of patient information. Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree in medical technology, medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical, or biological science. Transcript required. Work Experience Required: None. Certifications Required: Current state license (if applicable). ASCP, AMT, or AAB certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist. Incumbents certified by ASCP on or after Jan 1 2004 must complete ASCP Certification Maintenance Program. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proficient computer skills for data entry and patient information retrieval; proficiency with Windows-style applications and keyboard. Effective verbal and written communication; ability to present information clearly to varying levels of staff. Good analytical and problem‑solving skills. Good judgement and conflict‑resolution skills. Good interpersonal skills. Job Duties Perform, develop, and interpret routine and/or specialized laboratory testing independently and accurately within established time frames. Perform, analyze, and record quality control, instrument maintenance, and troubleshooting; make judgments regarding results and take appropriate corrective actions. Adhere to regulatory compliance guidelines, monitor accreditation standards, and follow safety, OIG compliance, and proficiency testing protocols. Participate in performance‑improvement opportunities and support business development by managing supply and reagent inventory. Adapt communication and procedures to the patient population, ensuring privacy, obtaining permissions, and tailoring explanations. Other related duties as required. Physical and Environmental Demands Heavy work: Occasionally exert 50–100 lb, frequently 25–50 lb, or constantly 10–20 lb to move objects. This exceeds the requirements for sedentary work. Use mechanical lifting devices (carts, dollies) or team lifts when necessary. Work flexible schedule (24/7, weekend, holiday, on‑call) and be able to stoop, bend, reach, grab, and maintain manual dexterity. Stand and sit for prolonged periods; travel between facilities. Exposure to blood, body fluid, tissue, hazardous medications, and hazardous waste during receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning, or disposal.
