- **Job Description Summary**Organization's Summary Statement: The University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s (UMES) Department of Agriculture, Food and Resource Sciences; Extension, and Agriculture Experiment Station seek applications and nominations for the Assistant Professor in Animal Science position. This position is a twelve-month, tenure-track appointment. The anticipated starting date for this position is spring 2026. The department offers B.S. degrees in Agribusiness Management and General Agriculture (with several concentrations), an M.S., and a Ph.D. in Food and Agricultural Sciences. The department is actively engaged in teaching, research, and extension, and has many faculty and staff with split appointments with UMES Extension and UMES Agriculture Experiment Station. This position will be 40% Research, 35% Extension, and 25% Teaching. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be primarily engaged in research (40%), Extension (35%), with a moderate teaching appointment (25%). •As a veterinarian, the incumbent is expected to provide support for the management of the University’s livestock resources and ensure compliance with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), including protocol review, facility inspections, adherence to ethical standards, and compliance of all animal care practices with federal, state, and institutional regulations (i.e., USDA and AAALAC guidelines). •In research support and collaboration, the successful candidate is expected to assist faculty and researchers with animal-related research protocols, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations. •In addition, the incumbent is expected to supervise and mentor veterinary technicians, research staff, and students as needed; participate in teaching of student learning labs, pre-vet activities; support the development and implementation of the new veterinary medical school and veterinary technician programs; and provide veterinary services during weekends and holidays as part of a rotational schedule. •The successful candidate will be required to develop a research and extension program working with and providing expertise to state organizations and producers in the animal industry. •Perform other related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications: • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an accredited institution • Eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Maryland • Meets federal standards to inspect animals, verify their health, and issue a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) that complies with both federal and state animal movement regulations. • Prior experience with small ruminants, poultry, swine, fish, rodents, equine, bovine, or comparable research animals. • Applicants must demonstrate strong evidence of scholarly activity and research productivity. • Must have experience in grantsmanship. • Knowledge of animal research regulations (e.g., USDA, AAALAC, NIH guidelines). Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: • Strong organizational skills and ability to work both collaboratively and independently. • Excellent communication skills and a commitment to animal welfare and ethical research. • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays. Physical Demands: •May require extended periods of standing, bending, stooping, sitting at desk. •May require lifting. •Requires communication with a variety of constituents externally and internally. •Requires operation of a variety of office equipment.
