Job Title Delicatessen Clerk Department Delicatessen FLSA Non-Exempt General Function As a Delicatessen Clerk, this position will be responsible for handling food in a safe manner and ensuring the work area is always clean and neat. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Provides prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service, exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all customer interactions. Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, and makes an effort to learn and address customers by name whenever possible. Assists customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach items, loading or unloading heavy items, noting customer suggestions, and performing other tasks to enhance the shopping experience. Answers the telephone promptly when called upon, taking customer orders and providing friendly, helpful service to callers. Takes customer orders at the delicatessen counter and works with co‑workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment. Reviews orders for the day and ensures proper sanitation procedures are followed, keeping the work area clean and neat. Reviews the status and appearance of food for freshness and ensures that an adequate supply is ready and on hand, following a production list. Anticipates product needs for the department on a daily basis, prepares, finishes, and replenishes product as necessary, and checks in product, puts it away, and reviews invoices. Runs the department registers, receives payment, and makes change where applicable. Removes trash in a timely manner and maintains strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress. Reports to work when scheduled and on time, and adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines. Secondary Duties and Responsibilities Washes dishes as necessary. Orders product and supplies as required. Delivers orders as needed. Prices products for customers as necessary. Assists in other areas of the store as needed. Performs other job‑related duties and special projects as required. Qualifications Ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions, write identifying information, and request supplies orally or in writing. Ability to solve arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages. Education and Experience Less than high school or equivalent experience and six months or less of similar or related work experience. Physical Requirements Must be able to physically perform medium work: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions. Visual requirements include clarity of vision at distances greater than 20 inches and less than 20 feet without or with correction, color vision, depth perception, and field of vision. Working Conditions This position is exposed to dust, noise, equipment movement hazards, and electrical shock on a daily basis. There is occasional exposure to temperature extremes and cleaning chemicals/solvents. The work environment is fast paced. Equipment Used to Perform Job Telephone, fax, copier, intercom system, computer, calculator, kitchen utensils, hot wrapping machine, garbage disposal, trash compactor, cardboard compactor, box cutter, slicer, scales, delivery van, pallet jack, hot wrapper, and knives. Contacts Has daily contact with the general public and customers, and maintains contact with federal/state governmental or regulatory agencies regarding inspections.
