Court Reporter / Voice Writer – Napa Superior Court The Napa Superior Court’s mission is to render fair and equal justice, inspire trust and confidence in the legal system, and serve the public with courtesy and efficiency. We are seeking Court Reporters and Voice Writers to join our team. Compassion – honoring others through trust, mutual respect, inclusiveness and transparency Excellence – striving to provide the best possible service to all Growth – valuing personal responsibility, collaboration and continuous improvement Responsibilities Produce a verbatim record of all testimony and proceedings heard before the Superior Court. Attend assigned court sessions and compile official records of all courtroom proceedings. Read back previously spoken testimony to judges, counsel, witnesses and jurors during court proceedings, to judges in chambers and to jurors during deliberations. Prepare transcripts of all or part of the court record in the required format and certify final transcripts. Operate computer‑aided or manual transcription equipment, including real‑time court reporting equipment, during court proceedings. Store, deliver and preserve reporting notes as official records of the Court in accordance with Government Code Section 69955. Transcribe verbatim notes in typewritten form meeting prescribed deadlines. Proofread, collate, bind and deliver completed transcripts as required. Prepare excerpts of testimony in typed form as requested for verification of elements of testimony or argument. Research and prepare transcripts from past proceedings at the request of the Court, counsel, governmental agencies and litigants. Conduct basic legal and office file research to ensure appropriate case documentation of names, quotations and similar information. Maintain records and prepare basic reports related to work performed. Perform related duties as assigned. Knowledge & Skills California statutes relating to court reporting services. Legal, medical and other technical terminology used during court proceedings. Operation, adjustment and minor maintenance of stenographic and related equipment. Computer equipment and data processing programs. Courtroom practices and procedures. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Current trends, practices and developments in court reporting technology. Abilities Take verbatim dictation of courtroom and related proceedings at a certified rate. Read back the court record in open court. Transcribe information accurately. Conduct basic legal and related research to verify transcribed information. Maintain attention to detail, organise and prioritise work and meet critical deadlines. Maintain accurate records of work performed. Type accurately and operate a personal computer and modern office equipment. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Adapt to changing court reporting technology, including real‑time reporting. Maintain confidential information where legal standards require. Hear and distinguish words spoken in varying tones and volumes. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with judges, professional and clerical staff, and the general public. Qualifications Experience : No prior experience required, but one year of court reporting experience and the ability to utilize real‑time reporting as directed by the court are highly desirable. Education : Equivalent to graduation from the twelfth grade. License or Certificate : Must possess and maintain a certificate in good standing as a Certified Shorthand Reporter issued by the Court Reporters Board of California or evidence of successful testing in accordance with Government Code Section 69942. Possession of a valid California driver’s license. Compensation & Benefits SIGNING BONUS: $10,000, paid in three annual installments after completion of the probationary period. REAL‑TIME DIFFERENTIAL: 6% for National‑certified Court Reporters performing real‑time reporting; 3% for other Court Reporters meeting real‑time capability requirements. CalPERS Retirement Plan. Vacation: 12 days annually initially. Sick Leave: 12 days annually. Personal Leave: 24 hours annually (pro‑rated). Holidays: 12 days annually. Health Insurance: CalPERS medical insurance (PPO and HMO options). Vision Service Plan insurance. Delta Dental Insurance (fully paid by the Court).
