Health Equity Community Organizer

JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Health Equity Community Organizer Department: Community Organizing and Advocacy Directly Responsible To: Manager of Community Organizing and Advocacy Type: Part Time, $25 an hour, 20 hours per week with occasional evening and weekend work General Statement of Duties The Health Equity Organizer will work with the Latinx community in Southwest Detroit and Downriver to advance community health, environmental justice, and collective well‑being. Through popular education, leadership development, community‑based participatory research, and grassroots organizing, this role engages residents in efforts that drive systems change. This position also builds community awareness of how individual health outcomes are shaped by broader social, economic, and political systems. The Health Equity Organizer will address health inequities by organizing alongside environmental justice initiatives and culturally grounded mental health efforts, advancing community‑led solutions that build collective power, improve quality of life, and hold institutions accountable. Skills A commitment to SW Detroit and addressing the local health issues impacting the region. Experience training and developing community leaders to take action around an issue. Successful community organizing experience (paid or as a volunteer), preferably on health environmental or social justice campaigns and in low‑income and communities of color. Ability and experience with working with diverse racial and ethnic communities. Deep respect for Latinx culture. Strong and effective communication skills. Strong interpersonal and relational skills. Capacity to think strategically and analytically about social, economic, cultural, and political issues affecting a community. Ability to work as a team and as an individual. Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) is required. Ability to speak and read Spanish. Responsibilities Raise community consciousness on how daily experiences are connected to larger systems of power. Tie individual health struggles to larger social and environmental determinants of health. Organize on environmental justice issues, i.e., air, soil, and water quality. Grow a base of community residents wanting to improve an area within health equity. Help coordinate the 3rd phase of the health impact assessment on the Gordie Howe International Bridge. Participate in the Trucks Off Our Streets Coalition. Build relationships across diverse stakeholders including residents, community organizations, academics, and government officials. Understand the systems of power that come into play/willing to address people within all these systems of power, including residents, community organizations, academics, and government officials. Work with the Parent and Youth Organizer on culturally rooted mental health advocacy. Assist in other ongoing COA efforts. #J-18808-Ljbffr Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation
