SHIPFITTER

Summary You will serve as a SHIPFITTER in the Department of Navy at multiple shipyard locations including Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Trident Refit Facility Bangor, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, and Intermediate Maintenance Facility. Responsibilities Install and fit parts on ships, locating positions of pieces by reference to water line, center lines, frame lines and other reference points. Install packing, gaskets, liners and similar items where necessary. Remove and repair or replace damaged parts of doors, hatches, and ship structures. Lay out shell, deck, and bulkhead plates, I‑beams, channel bars, angle bars, gun rings, struts, framing, foundation structures and other parts from blueprints and mold loft templates. Conditions of Employment Must be a U.S. citizen. Must be determined suitable for federal employment. Must participate in the direct deposit pay program. New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to pass E‑Verify employment verification. Retired military members applying within 180 days after retirement may be subject to DoD regulations. Men born after 12‑31‑59 must register for Selective Service. The position may be a bargaining unit position. Pre‑appointment physical examination may be required. Interim or final security clearance required before duty; failure may result in offer withdrawal. Drug test required; random testing may occur. Personal protective equipment (helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, safety shoes) must be worn continuously for the shift. Work may be performed in areas with hazardous physical or chemical agents (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, radiation). Exposure to high noise levels possible. Travel may be required to CONUS and OCONUS and to remote or isolated sites; extended travel on military or commercial aircraft possible. Extended work hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, may be required; overtime or night differential pay may apply. Qualifications Applicants must demonstrate the ability to perform the job with minimal supervision. Experience and training at a comparable level of knowledge and skill are required; length of time is secondary. Applicants will be evaluated on the following job elements: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, including blueprint reading Ability to use hand and power tools for metal work Dexterity in assembly, disassembly, and reassembly Knowledge of equipment, structures, materials and forging Layout and pattern development (geometric projection and triangulation) Salary and Schedule Hourly wage: $27.35 – $45.79.
