The City of La Habra Police Department is seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic, customer service-oriented individual for the position of Crossing Guard (Part-Time) that will provide safety for elementary school students as they cross busy streets adjacent to schools before and after school hours. Various split-shift hours are available, Monday through Friday. This recruitment will establish an eligibility list that will be in effect for a period of one year.

About the Department:

Since 1925, the La Habra Police Department has been dedicated to providing the residents of this community with a safe environment in which to live and work. This commitment to service is a tradition upheld by the men and women who serve La Habra and is reflected in all aspects of the department's day-to-day operations.

In addition to the regular duties of traffic and law enforcement, the La Habra Police Department strives to assess the needs of the City and, working in partnership with area residents, successfully address those concerns. Since law enforcement and public safety are a citywide concern, we actively seek the involvement of community members in all aspects of policing and welcome their participation.

About the Position:

Crossing Guards determine the proper time to stop traffic, signaling on-coming vehicles by displaying a warning sign, making sure vehicles are stopped, and then directing the children to cross. This position is also responsible for maintaining order among the children as they wait.

Hours vary depending on assignment, between 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Crossing Guards are compensated a minimum of three hours a day for each day they work. All training and equipment are provided. All school holidays and vacations (i.e., summer, winter and spring break) will be time off, without pay.

Examples of Duties

• Reports promptly at the designated time to location of assignment.
• Directs and provides the safe and orderly movement of children and pedestrians crossing pubic roadways and intersections; is observant at all times to ensure the safety of the children and themselves.
• Monitors traffic flow to recognize traffic openings, which permit them to safely step into and out of traffic.
• Cautions speeding and distracted drivers by the use of whistles, signs, hand held traffic wands, flashlights and/or hand signals. Crossing Guards are to report any situations that are a safety concern for pedestrians, bicyclists, and traffic.
• Notifies Police Department of hazardous roadway conditions and physical hazards.
• Clears crosswalks of rocks, glass, cans and other items in order to prevent injuries to children.
• Maintains assigned equipment (e.g. stop sign, traffic vest, etc.).
• Perform related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

Requirements: Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Must have the ability to safely escort children across the street.
• Must be able to stand for extended periods of time while holding a stop sign.
• Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
• Must have the ability to respond to a La Habra crossing guard location within a short period of time.
• Must have the ability to stay alert and to hear and see surrounding traffic.
• Possess physical stamina and coordination, and have good hearing and vision (cannot be color blind).
• Must have the ability to move and carry signs.

Knowledge of:

• Basic pedestrian safety measures and regulations.
• Basic techniques for effectively dealing with school children.
• Basic techniques for effectively dealing with unusual or emergency situations.

Ability to:

• Stand and walk for up to one and one-half hours at a time, three hours per day.
• Communicate effectively with children, citizens and co-workers.
• Bend and stoop.
• Lift up to 10 pounds.
• Hold-up a warning sign for up to five minutes at a time, three hours per day.
• Hear children's voices and automobiles.
• See streetlight colors and visually judge distances.
• Provide excellent customer service skills.

License and other requirements: Must possess a valid and appropriate California Class C driver's license and acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment in this class series.

Physical: Essential and marginal functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for light carrying; walking and standing for prolonged periods of time; stepping up and down; reaches shoulder height frequently as well as reaches above and below shoulder height; occasional bending; judging distances in order to anticipate the possibility of a speeding vehicle being unable to stop for the crosswalk.

Special Conditions

Public Employee Disaster Service Worker: In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, all La Habra city employees are required to perform assigned disaster service worker duties in the event of an emergency or a disaster.
