Job Description:
Works under the direction of the Crew Leader (Parks) in performing advanced manual labor and maintenance duties in the upkeep, development, and repair of city public areas, including, but not limited to, parks and athletic fields, city buildings, and facilities. This position requires proficiency in operating various equipment and tools while adhering to safety standards. The Service Worker III will occasionally lead a small team when necessary to ensure the Parks and Recreation facilities are maintained at the highest standard for community enjoyment and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist other personnel with striping, painting facilities such as restrooms, ball fields, buildings, and other items like tables and barrels using striping machines, sprayers, rollers, and paint brushes.
• Perform horticulture work with flowers, trees, and shrubs on city grounds.
• Maintain facilities and other city grounds by performing groundskeeping tasks such as mowing, edging, trimming, planting grass, trees, shrubs, flowers, and mulching using a variety of light to heavy equipment.
• Perform construction, remodeling, repairs, and preventive maintenance on city facilities, fences, recreation equipment, and grounds as needed.
• Perform light carpentry, electrical, irrigation, and/or plumbing duties as needed.
• Maintain and care for parks, playgrounds, sports fields, and recreational facilities. Collect and dispose of trash and debris from parks, trails, and public spaces.
• Clean and maintain restrooms, picnic areas, pavilions, and other park facilities, including sanitizing fixtures, floors, mirrors, and replenishing soap and paper goods.
• Assist in maintaining and repairing park equipment, benches, tables, and other park assets and city facilities.
• Operate basic hand tools and small machinery such as mowers, blowers, trimmers, chainsaws, and other light equipment.
• Assist with event setup and breakdown, including moving equipment and preparing park areas for public use, setting up tents, tables, and chairs for City-sponsored events and rentals.
• Ensure compliance with safety protocols and report any hazards or maintenance issues to crew leaders.
• Respond to work orders and assignments through the city’s request management system.
• Provide excellent customer service to park visitors, answering questions and offering assistance as needed.
• Load, transport, and unload necessary materials and equipment for assigned projects.
• May assist with concrete application and form building.
• Assist in performing maintenance and routine repairs at city parks and athletic fields, including the assembly of equipment.
• Conduct routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment, making minor repairs as needed.
• Occasionally operate backhoes, tractors, bucket trucks, front-end loaders, skid loaders, forklifts, or other light to heavy equipment.
• Maintain grounds using a variety of power equipment such as rotary mowers, tillers, aerifiers, blades, augers, rollers, broadcasters, and sprayers.
• Assist and lead crews in maintaining trees and brush, including using chainsaws and other light equipment.
• Assist in the construction and performing light carpentry, electrical, irrigation, and plumbing duties on facilities, buildings, and equipment.
• Inspect and service tractors, vehicles, and equipment on a routine basis, making minor repairs and adjustments as needed.
• Assist in setting up traffic control devices to warn traffic of hazardous areas.
• Assist and may lead in training employees.
• Serve as essential emergency personnel when required.
• Regular and prompt attendance is an essential function of the position.
• Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications:

• Education: High School graduation or its equivalent, plus at least two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and operation of city parks and facilities, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Knowledge of : Basic building, electrical, plumbing, carpentry repair, and landscape management. Arborist knowledge. Work Zone Traffic Control/Qualified Flagger, Backhoe/Front End Loader, Turf Preparation, Turfgrass Ecology and Management Short Course.
• Skill/Ability to: The ability to work under general supervision, understand and follow instructions; operate and maintain a variety of power and hand tools; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public; tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions.
• Safety/Physical Requirements: Heavy. Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying, and using a force equal to ninety (90) pounds.
• Certifications & Licenses Required: Possess a valid Texas Driver’s License and must possess at least one of the following or obtain within 12 to 18 months of employment: Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI), Certified Pool Operator (CPO), or Turfgrass Ecology & Management Certification, in addition to Pesticide/Herbicide Applicator Certification.
