Genetic Counselor Assistant Department: PCMG-MAIN | Genetics Location: Phoenix Shift: Mon-Fri, Days, 8am-5pm Category: Laboratory/Pathology Posting #: 1031455 Employee Type: Full-Time Position Summary The Genetic Counselor Assistant is an integral part of the Genetics Division and, under the supervision of the Genetic Counselor Lead, contributes to patient care through case preparation, optimization of clinic and administrative workflows, and collaboration to ensure family‑centered care. Position Duties Composes correspondence and independently generates other communications, including e‑mails, record requests, and lab review through effective use of appropriate software applications. Prepares patient’s chart for clinic visit by gathering documentation, updating the EMR prior to the visit, and notifying participants of changes to ensure timely communication. Assists patients, families, and others with hospital‑related inquiries and concerns. Manages incoming phone calls and e‑mails related to genetic services and referrals. Provides administrative support to the department and coordinates clinic workflow and communications, including phone management, e‑mail correspondence, file maintenance, and chart preparation. Rotates as a medical scribe while accompanying the practitioner during patient interview and examination. Documents practitioner‑dictated patient history, including history of present illness, review of systems, past medical and surgical history, family and social histories, medications, and allergies. Documents physical examination findings and procedures performed by the practitioner. Documents results of laboratory and radiographic studies as dictated by the practitioner. Documents the correct time of patient‑care related activities, including practitioner‑to‑practitioner communication, family communication, and re‑examination of the patient. Assists the practitioner in navigating the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and locates requested information. Ensures the practitioner reviews all documentation completed by the medical scribe upon conclusion of the patient encounter. Ensures authentication takes place before the practitioner and medical scribe leave the patient‑care area and that all orders for patient care are communicated. Performs miscellaneous job‑related duties as requested. Qualifications Education 1–2 years post‑high school education. Required: Bachelor’s degree in a biological/health science. Experience Minimum of 2 years medical experience in a hospital setting or private practice. Preferred: Experience and understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, diagnostic procedures, pharmacology, and treatment assessments to accurately transcribe dictated reports. Required: Previous experience or ability to translate medical abbreviations into their expanded forms. Special Skills Ability to multi‑task and communicate professionally, with proficiency in typing, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and oral communication. Ability to listen to complex medical information and summarize clearly. Excellent English composition skills for professional, polished writing at a high rate of production. Ability to learn and use all functions of electronic medical record and transcription software. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, interdepartmental contacts, and patients/families. Practical punctuality, preparedness, good judgment, organizational ability, initiative, attention to detail, and self‑motivation; discreet, tactful, and modest performance.
