Physician - Spinal Cord Injury and Disorder

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval determines award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years). Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States citizenship or, if not a citizen, no qualified citizens can be recruited per VA policy. Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from an approved VA school. Full, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia. Residency training that is approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to board certification, or one of the following alternatives: One year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice. Non‑U.S. residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. Fellowship or other advanced training relevant to Spinal Cord Injury practice is creditable toward experience requirements. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Spinal Cord Injury Medicine board certification and/or accredited Spinal Cord Injury fellowship. Board certification in related specialties such as PM&R, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Family Medicine, or Geriatrics. Responsibilities Serve as Staff Physician for the Spinal Cord Injury and Disorder (SCI/D) Unit, accountable to the Chief of the unit. Participate as a leader in the SCI/D interdisciplinary team and coordinate care to ensure Veterans receive optimal treatment. Contribute to the VA’s clinical, educational, and research missions, collaborating with interprofessional staff and trainees. Teach residents, fellows, and students; potential faculty appointment at academic institutions based on core specialty. Provide initial SCI/D care, consultations, inpatient and outpatient medical care, and specialty procedures as clinically authorized. Develop and implement treatment plans, document patient care, and maintain timely record‑keeping. Educate patients, families, and caregivers; collaborate on best practices and quality improvement initiatives. Mentor and train SCI/D fellows and PM&R residents; partake in on‑call coverage and administrative tasks as directed. Engage in scholarly activity, including research and quality improvement, with evidence of annual productivity. Advocate for full access to patient‑centered care and comply with VA policies, procedures, and committee participation.
