California State Senate Internship

BASIC FUNCTIONS: In a learner's capacity, the legislative Intern will have the primary responsibility for general office duties to include but are not limited to, certificate creation, drafting resolutions, community outreach, monitoring and responding to the public inbox for the Member, and conducting legislative research. Applicants must be organized, detailed, and able to work well with others.

DUTIES: Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Staff, the ideal candidate will be passionate about public service and able to work in a fast-paced, professional environment in addition to performing constituent services and outreach projects as needed. The legislative intern will observe and learn from legislative teammates as they take stakeholder meetings, analyze legislation and brief the Senator, staff the Senator's bills, and create a professional office environment that is welcoming to all constituents and members of the public.

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Strong oral and written communication skills are essential in addition to proficiency with Microsoft Office and PCs. Familiarity with legislative culture and process is preferred. Candidates must be able to prioritize tasks, pay close attention to detail, accurately follow direction, and communicate clearly and concisely with both team members and with members of the public. The ideal candidate is creative, detail oriented, and able to work well with a variety of people.

LOCATION, BENEFITS, SALARY AND FILING DATE: This position is located in Sacramento, CA and requires in person attendance. The Senate's core business hours are 9:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, scheduling for interns may need to be more flexible depending on the office needs. Interns hired to work fulltime or 35 hours per week, must conclude their internship in three months or less. All paid internships must conclude within six months, unless the intern is working less than half-time (17.5 hours per week). Interns who are under the age of 18 are only authorized to work remotely. Salary is $21 per hour. No benefits provided with this classification. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
