POSITION SUMMARY

• Assists surgeon during operative and invasive procedures.

• Creates and maintains the sterile field.

• Ensures operating room is adequately prepared for surgical procedure.

• Assists in the nursing care and preparation of the surgical patient.

• Monitors PAR level of surgical instruments and supplies.

• Cleans and sterilizes surgical instruments as required.

OVERVIEW

• The evaluation is to assure individual performance, departmental goals and organizational goals are aligned. It is designed to support communication between the manager and the employee. Employee perception of their own performance is very important. To maximize the benefit of this process, both the manager and the employee participate in the evaluation process.

B. Education

• High School diploma or GED

C. Licensure

• Operating Room Technician Certification. Current BCLS certification.

D. Experience

• 1 year of relevant work experience

• 1 year of experience in complex orthopedic cases

• Sedentary: Exert up to 10 lb. of force occasionally and/or a minute amount frequently - 25-49%

• Basic understanding of the recognized standards and aseptic techniques and procedures, sterilization techniques and procedures, infection control and work flow principles and requirements, equipment and supply procession, exercises responsible judgement to provide necessary supplies and equipment for patient care, basic computer skills.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

• Below are those tasks, duties, and responsibilities that comprise the means of accomplishing the position’s purpose and objectives. These are critical or fundamental to the performance of the position. They are the major functions for which the person in the position is held accountable. Following are the essential functions of the position, along with the corresponding performance standards.

o Demonstrates competency in the following areas:

 Interacts professionally with patient and family.

 Provides patient with explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.

 Notifies appropriate licensed personnel as indicated to insure proper patient care.

 Adapts procedures to meet individual needs of neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients for treatment.

 Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment for each individual surgical procedure.

 Demonstrates competence in care of specimens and accurately handles specimens at all times.

 Assists in positioning, prepping and draping of patients for surgical procedures.

 Accurately completes operation room counts (instruments, sponges, needles); follows proper procedure in the event of incorrect count; reports all discrepancies to Circulating RN and surgeon and/or corrects immediately.

 Carries out medical/surgical asepsis (sterile technique) during treatment/procedures.

 Checks all equipment/instruments needed prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning.

 Protects patient's right to privacy; closely observes patient with minimal disturbance.

 Strictly follows aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures.

 Sets up, scrubs and prepares for procedures in a timely manner prior to the start of the procedure, unless otherwise directed by Circulating RN or Nurse Manager.

 Always maintains an orderly sterile field (instrument mayo/backable) for the purpose of efficiency.

 Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after last case; restocks supplies, when necessary and organizes effectively for end-of-case clean up.

 Follows reference textbook written procedures for steam sterilization; knows responsibilities and the necessity for mechanical, chemical and biological monitoring.

 Consults with other staff members when in question or unfamiliar with equipment or procedure.

 Regularly collaborates with other members of the nursing team in order to maintain equipment and supplies for surgical procedures.

 Establishes and maintains effective communication and good working relationship with co-workers for the patient's benefit.

 Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts and good judgement within the Operating Room Technician's scope of practice.

 Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of assigned case and instruments, supplies and/or trays to be pulled for the procedure.

o Ortho Specific Job Duties:

 Ortho/spine tech anticipates and prepares for the complex instrumentation and other needs prior to the start of the procedure

 Maintains the integrity, safety, and efficiency of the sterile field throughout the surgical procedure

 Displays important personal qualities including a stable temperament, an ability to work under intense pressure, a keen sense of responsibility, and a concern for accuracy in performing all duties

 Performs complex duties that vary greatly as to instrumentation and knowledge.

 Actively involved in supplies and instrument evaluation and inventory for the ortho/spine service.
