Pathology Lab Supervisor

Overview Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute‑designated cancer center in Washington. Pathology Laboratory The Pathology Laboratory processes all tissue and bone marrow specimens collected at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, including samples from leukemia and lymphoma and bone marrow specimens from UWMC, NHW, and Fred Hutch for transplant and hematology/oncology patients. It also processes surgical pathology samples from transplant complications and other diseases. The laboratory operates six days a week with on‑call technologists and pathologists available 24/7 to run and result critical specimens. It provides routine histologic staining, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and histology services for research studies. The Position: Pathology Lab Supervisor – responsible for daily operations, laboratory quality monitoring, and staff management, including hiring, performance appraisals, competency assessments, and disciplinary action. Responsibilities Performs the duties of a Clinical Histotechnician III Assures the quality, completeness and maintenance of the laboratory’s procedures, policies, and safety manuals Supervises daily operations, including scheduling, sample receipt, routine and special testing, quality control, inventory, projects, and priority setting Works with the Laboratory Director and Manager on strategic goals and long‑term planning Evaluates and documents new techniques and procedures; assists in the selection of new laboratory instruments, equipment, and supplies Implements safety rules and regulations in compliance with institution, state and federal standards Plans, schedules and/or coordinates continuing education and in‑service education programs for technicians Acts as liaison for the laboratory with other health care and administrative personnel Assists in development of laboratory budget and monitors expenditures of funds Qualifications Required: Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, or a Bachelor’s degree plus equivalent education and training as defined in 42CFR493.1489(b)(3); must meet the CLIA education requirements for high‑complexity testing Minimum of five years of experience in clinical laboratory testing HT or HTL (ASCP) laboratory certification Demonstrated ability to handle personnel conflicts and issues diplomatically Organizational and problem‑solving skills Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment Must be able to differentiate between colors and pass a standardized color‑vision screen Preferred: At least one year of laboratory training or experience in high‑complexity testing in Anatomic Pathology, meeting CLIA training and experience requirements for a high‑complexity general supervisor in Anatomic Pathology Salary and Benefits Annual base salary range: $97,823.00 to $146,681.00, pay based on experience and qualifications. 1.0 FTE – Monday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., fully onsite.
