Class A CDL Local Driver

Job Summary Local P&D or City Drivers operate tractor‑trailer combinations between company service centers and customer facilities or work sites within the service center’s geographic area. Drivers sort, handle, load, and unload freight at company and customer locations, ensuring time‑critical delivery and excellent condition of goods. Key Responsibilities Operate vehicle safely within DOT regulations that govern safe driving, hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and transportation of hazardous materials. Meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation and pass required drug and alcohol tests. Load and unload freight on trailers using a motorized forklift, pallet jack, or manual methods while complying with state and federal DOT guidelines. Use loading techniques such as tight or cross loading to maximize space and maintain trailer stability. Secure freight inside trailers with pallets, straps, rope, or other appropriate tools. Utilize the Dock Yard Management System to monitor freight shipment locations. Read and interpret shipping labels, shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, and other shipment documentation. Maintain accurate logs of trips, hours, and mileage in compliance with company and DOT requirements. Communicate with service‑center personnel, dispatch, and customers to coordinate pickups and deliveries. Remain available for work to meet customer schedules and deadlines. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent (preferred). Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with double/triple trailer, tanker, and hazardous materials endorsements. At least 12 months of tractor‑trailer driving experience or a graduate of a State‑certified, licensed, and S‑Department approved driving school. Must possess a clean motor‑vehicle record. Ability to read, write, and speak English and perform basic math for receipts and logs. Proficiency in using handheld tablets and two‑way radio or phone communication. Knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and transportation of hazardous materials. Must meet U.S. Department of Transportation medical standards and pass required drug, alcohol, and orientation/training tests. Minimum age 22 years. Good oral communication skills and ability to follow instructions. Physical Demands Drive and remain alert for up to 11 hours continuously. Stand, walk, bend, squat, and climb on varied surfaces, including wet or slippery conditions. Frequent lifting and carrying of freight ranging from 1 to 100 pounds over distances up to 100 feet. Load and unload freight weighing up to 50,000 pounds, including moving up to 500‑pound containers using dolly or cart. Operate hand‑held equipment such as slack‑wrap, pallet jack, steering wheel, and safety chains. Perform manual tasks such as lowering landing gear, operating fifth‑wheel release, and opening cargo doors. Successfully complete physical testing requirements consistent with these demands. Work Environment The work environment includes exposure to various conditions such as working with or around others during loading/unloading, operating an enclosed vehicle while driving, and working in enclosed trailers. Employees may be exposed to all weather conditions, variable noise levels, and lighting conditions that range from bright to low light. Schedule Shift: AM; Days of Week: Monday through Friday.
