Criminal Investigator III - Auto Industry Division.

Overview The Colorado Department of Revenue is responsible for licensing and regulating the auto industry. The mission is to become a trusted partner to every Coloradan to help them navigate government complexities, driven by service, teamwork, accountability, integrity, and respect. Position Overview Criminal Investigator III – Auto Industry Division (Motor Vehicle Board). This role ensures compliance with Title 44, Article 20 of the Colorado Revised Statutes and related federal laws, conducts investigations, and provides educational services to licensees and the public. Responsibilities Process license applications and collect fees. Conduct background, criminal, and administrative investigations of license‑related violations. Lead complex criminal investigations involving financial and document‑heavy cases. Perform interrogations, interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; issue criminal summonses. Prepare case files and testify in criminal court, civil hearings, and administrative actions. Conduct compliance inspections to ensure licensees, premises, and records meet guidelines; initiate disciplinary actions. Provide educational services, training, and outreach to stakeholders including licensees, the public, law enforcement, and other governmental agencies. Collect and preserve physical and documentary evidence; conduct pre‑employment investigations of applicants. Track workload and coordinate investigative support for the Motor Vehicle Board. Minimum Qualifications Six (6) years of relevant investigative experience conducting criminal or regulatory investigations. Valid Colorado POST certification that is active and in good standing. A bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, public administration, criminology, criminal justice, criminalistics, political science, police science, law, psychology, sociology, or a closely related field (may count for up to 4 years of experience). Successful completion of background and tax checks, a driver’s license, and a physical/psychological evaluation. Willingness to perform heavy lifting up to 100 pounds and work nights, rotating shifts, weekends, on‑call status, holidays, and extended travel. Ability to maintain a valid firearm qualification and arrest‑control techniques certification. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of Colorado rules and regulations related to the Auto Industry Division. Recent investigative experience and familiarity with statutes, research databases, and compliance environments. Professional investigative or compliance experience in a regulatory setting. Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Experience as a detective, criminal investigator, or patrol/police officer. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.
