Position Overview Photographer plays a vital role in visually documenting, interpreting, and communicating the mission, culture, and operational environment of a high-visibility Navy customer. This position is responsible for producing high-quality photographic content that enhances communication effectiveness, strengthens organizational identity, and supports both internal engagement and external outreach. Photography serves as a powerful storytelling tool, capturing real-world operations, personnel, and events to convey authenticity, credibility, and impact. Through compelling imagery, this role helps translate complex technical environments into accessible, engaging visuals that resonate with diverse audiences, including leadership, workforce personnel, industry partners, and the public. Working within a dynamic and historically rich environment such as the Washington Navy Yard, the Photographer contributes to showcasing mission execution, commemorating milestones, and supporting outreach initiatives, while reinforcing the Command's brand and cultural identity. Responsibilities Visual Storytelling & Documentation: Capture high-quality imagery of events, ceremonies, operations, and personnel that communicates mission impact, preserves historical record, and supports strategic messaging. Content Creation for Multi-Platform Use: Produce and deliver photographic content optimized for digital signage, websites, social media, and internal communications platforms, ensuring consistency and adaptability across formats. Mission & Culture Representation: Create imagery that reflects both technical excellence and the human element of the Command, highlighting innovation, teamwork, heritage, and community engagement. Pre-Production Planning: Collaborate with stakeholders to define objectives, identify key moments, and plan shoots, including location scouting, shot lists, and scheduling to ensure efficient execution. Editing & Post-Production Excellence: Edit, retouch, and format images to meet professional standards, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and visual appeal while maintaining authenticity. Brand & Standards Compliance: Ensure all imagery aligns with Navy branding, style guidelines, and security protocols, including proper use of insignias, environments, and subject representation. Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with Government representatives, designers, videographers, and subject matter experts to ensure all visual products meet communication objectives and technical accuracy. Technical Operations & Quality Control: Operate and maintain professional photography equipment, manage file organization and archiving, and ensure all deliverables meet quality control and compliance requirements. Required Skills and Experience Bachelor's degree in Photojournalism or a related field with at least four (4) years of experience, OR at least six (6) years of relevant professional photography experience with a bachelor's degree in a related discipline. Demonstrated experience in event, portrait, and documentary-style photography, particularly in structured or high-visibility environments. Proficiency with professional photography equipment and editing software (primarily Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom). Strong understanding of visual composition, lighting techniques, and storytelling principles. Ability to translate complex or technical subject matter into clear, compelling visual narratives. Knowledge of file management, archiving, and metadata standards. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, particularly in Government or military environments. Familiarity with security protocols and handling of sensitive environments or information is preferred. Ability to work effectively remotely in cross‑functional teams. Ability to meet deadlines and produce quality work. Proficient in Microsoft Suite software including Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint, and PowerPoint. Clearance Requirements U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
