The Mechanical Technician II is a technical role responsible for independently executing complex maintenance, leading troubleshooting efforts, and mentoring junior technicians. This role takes ownership of critical equipment reliability and optimization across pumps, motors, pneumatic systems, chiller operations, and gas and utility systems. The Technician II serves as the primary on‑shift subject matter expert, driving measurable improvements and ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient facility operations. Advancement reflects sustained high performance, subject matter expertise, and demonstrated leadership. Key Responsibilities Pumps & Motors Independently couple, align, and commission pumps and motors to OEM specifications using laser alignment tools and dial indicators. Perform complex rebuilds on a wide variety of pump types including centrifugal, diaphragm, peristaltic, and positive displacement units. Diagnose and correct advanced pump and motor failures, including root cause identification, without supervision. Select appropriate mechanical seals, bearings, and packing; oversee or perform installation and verify integrity post‑repair. Lead preventive maintenance planning and execution for all pump and motor assets; develop and refine PM procedures. Efficient in supporting commissioning and systemization tasks. Performs work with power tools, cordless tools and specialized equipment. Drive Systems & Mechanical Components Perform precision shaft and coupling alignment; verify results with dial indicators or laser tools and document for equipment history. Oversee belt drive maintenance, including advanced tensioning calculations, pulley condition assessment, and alignment verification. Troubleshoot hydraulic circuits including pumps, cylinders, valves, accumulators, and hoses; conduct fluid sampling and interpret analysis. Pneumatic Systems Lead diagnosis and repair of pneumatic systems, including actuators, regulators, and control valve assemblies. Analyze pneumatic system performance and recommend or implement design improvements and component upgrades. Train and guide Technician I personnel on pneumatic system troubleshooting and safe practices. Chiller & Cooling Systems Oversee chiller system performance including refrigeration cycle analysis, coolant management, and component‑level repairs. Interpret chiller operational data to proactively identify degradation trends and plan corrective actions. Coordinate with vendors and OEM resources for complex refrigerant or compressor‑related repairs. Gas & Utility Systems Serve as the primary resource for gas and utility systems, ensuring safe operation, regulatory compliance, and efficient distribution across the facility. Develop and enforce standard operating procedures for gas system isolation, pressure verification, and controlled shutdowns. Conduct audits of utility systems and drive corrective actions to maintain compliance and minimize downtime. Leadership & Continuous Improvement Mentor and develop Mechanical Technician I team members through hands‑on coaching and knowledge transfer. Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring or critical equipment failures; present findings and corrective action plans to management. Support equipment optimization initiatives, reliability audits, and predictive maintenance programs. Participate in capital project commissioning, equipment startups, and modification reviews. Documentation & Compliance Maintain complete and accurate CMMS records including work orders, PM completions, parts usage, and equipment history. Read, interpret, and redline engineering drawings, P&IDs, and OEM manuals; communicate discrepancies to engineering. Ensure all work is performed in full compliance with OSHA, plant safety policies, LOTO/LOTO‑Plus, and permit‑to‑work systems. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Trade certificate, diploma, or equivalent technical qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, or related discipline. Minimum 5+ years of progressive hands‑on maintenance experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment. Advanced expertise with pumps (centrifugal, diaphragm, peristaltic, positive displacement), motors, pneumatics, chiller systems, and hydraulics. Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical failures. Proficiency with precision measurement instruments, laser alignment tools, and diagnostic equipment. Strong ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, P&IDs, and equipment manuals. In-depth knowledge of LOTO/LOTO‑Plus, confined space entry, permit‑to‑work systems, and applicable regulatory standards. Physical capability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in varied environments including heights, confined spaces, and outdoor conditions. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience with predictive maintenance technologies such as vibration analysis, thermography, or ultrasound. Proficiency with CMMS platforms (SAP PM, Maximo, or similar). Hydraulic systems certification (e.g., IFPS Hydraulic Specialist) or chiller/refrigeration certification. Multi‑craft capabilities including intermediate electrical troubleshooting. Experience in oil & gas, chemical, water/wastewater, mining, or heavy manufacturing industries. Ability to lead and influence peers; fosters a culture of learning and continuous improvement. Adaptability to rotating shifts, on‑call responsibilities, weekends, or overtime as required. WORKING CONDITIONS This position operates in an industrial plant environment. The technician will be exposed to moving machinery, high temperatures, pressurized systems, and hazardous chemicals. Appropriate PPE is required at all times. The role may require shift work, on‑call rotations, and periodic overtime to support continuous operations. The good faith hourly range for this role is $33.00 – $38.00 at the time of this posting. Where you fall within the range depends on your experience, skills, and location. This range reflects base salary only and does not include benefits or bonus/incentive. This range may be adjusted in the future.
