RN Pediatric Psychiatric

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Unit provides specialized nursing care to patients aged 5-18 experiencing acute mental health crises. The role involves delivering safe, effective, and therapeutic care through psychopharmacological interventions and robust group therapies such as Activities Therapy, Mindfulness, Wellness, and Coping Skills. The RN collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to stabilize patients and achieve treatment goals, requiring at least two years of pediatric mental health experience and a New York State RN license. Responsibilities:

• Provide skilled nursing care to pediatric patients with acute mental health needs.
• Participate in psychopharmacological interventions as part of patient treatment plans.
• Facilitate and support group therapy sessions including Activities Therapy, Mindfulness, Wellness, and Coping Skills groups.
• Conduct patient assessments and monitor mental health status.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement individualized care plans.
• Ensure patient safety and therapeutic environment on the unit.
• Document patient care and progress accurately and timely.
• Respond to emergencies and provide crisis intervention as needed.
• Participate in unit-specific protocols and quality improvement initiatives.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Minimum of two years pediatric mental health nursing experience.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association.
• Strong clinical assessment and psychiatric nursing skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Blue Card certification.
• Experience working in a large academic medical center.
• Telemetry experience.

Special Considerations:

• Work includes rotating day, evening, and night shifts.
• Weekend, holiday, and on-call duties as required by unit needs.
• Care provided in an inpatient psychiatric setting for children and adolescents.
• Must be able to comply with unit-specific protocols including blocked weekend nights.

Scheduling:

• 36 or 48 hours per week, with rotating shifts covering days, evenings, and nights.
• Schedules include weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments based on unit requirements.
