2026-27 Instructional Assistant/SPED Special Needs EDP HQ - Shea MS Starting Date: Aug 3, 2026 Location: Shea Middle School Duration: 9 months, 6.75 hours/day Grade: 17, $17.50/hour Position Type: Non-Interim Benefits: ASRS, Paid Sick/Personal Time, Medical and optional Dental/Vision Highly Qualified (HQ) Requirements HS Diploma or GED and one of the following 60 postsecondary hours of college coursework; or AA degree; or Passing of ParaPro Assessment: ETS Parapro Assessment ( ACT Workkeys ( The Master Teacher Para Educator ( Purpose Statement The Instructional Assistant – Special Education supports the instructional program by supervising, caring for, and instructing special needs students in regular classrooms, self‑contained classrooms, or individually. Responsibilities include implementing instruction plans, monitoring behavior outside class, and providing information to appropriate school personnel. This role reports to the Teacher and/or Site Administrator. Essential Functions Adapt classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives. Administer tests, homework, meet‑ups, and make‑up work to support teachers. Assists medically fragile, physically disabled, or developmentally delayed students (e.g., lifting, feeding, toilet training, diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, medication) to maintain personal hygiene and immediate healthcare needs. Attend meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) to acquire and convey information related to job functions. Communicate with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives. Escort students to destinations (e.g., bathroom, office classroom) to ensure efficient and safe arrival and departure. Implement behavioral plans designed by the IEP team under teacher supervision for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions to reinforce learning concepts. Intervene in potential conflicts using appropriate physical and/or therapeutic approaches to diffuse confrontations and minimize disruptions. Document instructional materials and/or manuals and electronic files/records to ensure availability and meet mandated requirements. Model conversation, manners, clean‑up activities, listening, job skills, and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner. Monitor students’ daily schedule and behavior plan to maintain a safe and positive learning environment. Monitors students during assigned periods across various school environments (e.g., rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to maintain safety and positivity. Perform general clerical functions (copying, filing, data entry) to support the instructional program. Provide instruction to students under teacher supervision in individual and group activities (academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, job skills) to reinforce objectives, implement IEP plans, adapt to mainstream classrooms/workplaces, and ensure student success. Remain with students at all times to guarantee safety, remove students when necessary, and de‑escalate situations outside the classroom. Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns. Other Functions Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Skills: adhere to safety practices; operate standard office equipment and software; prepare and maintain accurate records. Knowledge: basic math (fractions, percentages, ratios); read manuals; write documents following prescribed formats; present information; understand multi‑step written and oral instructions. Also instructional procedures, age‑appropriate activities, safety practices, conflict resolution, and stages of child development/behavior. Abilities: schedule activities; gather and collate data; use basic job‑related equipment; work with a wide diversity of individuals; solve problems; adapt to changing priorities; communicate with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality; work as a team; handle interruptions; maintain positive rapport with students, employees, and community. Experience Job related experience is desired. Education High school diploma or equivalent.
