Reports To: Store Manager

Employment Type: Full-Time

Pay: $15-25

Job Summary

The Deli Manager is responsible for the overall operation of the deli department, including staffing, ordering, food safety, product quality, customer service, and profitability. This role requires strong leadership skills, food service knowledge, and the ability to manage a team in a fast-paced retail environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Hire, train, schedule, and supervise deli department staff.

• Oversee daily deli operations, including food prep, cooking, slicing, and merchandising.

• Ensure all products meet company quality, freshness, and presentation standards.

• Monitor and maintain proper food safety and sanitation practices in compliance with health codes.

• Manage inventory levels, place orders, and control waste/shrink.

• Set and monitor department pricing, promotions, and product mix in coordination with store management.

• Track department sales, labor costs, and profitability against budget/targets.

• Handle customer questions, special orders, and complaints with a focus on service quality.

• Ensure equipment (slicers, ovens, fryers, cases) is maintained, cleaned, and safely operated.

• Conduct performance evaluations and coach staff on performance and safety.

• Maintain accurate department records, including temperature logs and labeling/dating compliance.

• Collaborate with store manager on merchandising, seasonal promotions, and store-wide initiatives.

• Perform other duties as assigned by store management.

Qualifications

• Previous deli, food service, or grocery management experience preferred.

• Working knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations (ServSafe certification a plus).

• Proven leadership and staff management skills.

• Strong organizational and inventory management skills.

• Ability to read and analyze sales, labor, and cost reports.

• Excellent customer service and communication skills.

• Basic computer skills for scheduling, ordering, and reporting systems.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly, and up to 100 lbs occasionally.

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

• Ability to work in a variety of temperatures, including refrigerated/cold areas.

• Ability to safely operate deli equipment (slicers, ovens, fryers).

• Ability to bend, reach, and move product throughout a shift.
