Chemical Threat Specialist

Overview The State Hygienic Laboratory in Coralville is seeking a Chemical Threat Specialist to prepare clinical and environmental samples, analyze data, respond to human exposures and chemical threats, identify unknown chemical threats received from emergency response organizations, and maintain and operate instrumentation. Position Details Location: Coralville, Iowa Mode: On campus Work Schedule: Monday‑Friday 08:00‑17:00, with availability to respond to emergencies outside regular hours Status: Regular Pay Grade 4A Qualifications Education or Equivalency Required: Bachelor of Science in chemistry, analytical chemistry or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required Qualifications: Typically 1 year of relevant laboratory experience and knowledge of analytical chemistry. Effective communication skills, written and verbal, with attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work constructively with a variety of individuals and groups to achieve organizational goals. Highly Desirable Qualifications: Master’s degree in analytical chemistry. Experience with gas chromatography or liquid chromatography. Experience with mass spectrometry for quantitative and qualitative analysis. Identification of unknown chemical samples. Clinical laboratory analysis of urine and blood‑borne pathogens. Method validation or verification. Knowledge of forensic sample handling procedures. Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS). Experience working with first responders and other emergency response organizations. Knowledge of CBRNe threats, especially chemical agents of opportunity for terrorism. Legal and Additional Requirements Compliance with CLIA regulations requires an official transcript or a foreign degree transcript evaluated by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.
