Location : Oakland, CA

Schedule : Monday through Friday, 24 hr./week 8:30am-2:30pm, Mon., Tue., Thur., Fri.

Travel : Local travel may be required

Role Duration : Thru June 2027, with potential for the temporary term and/or hours to be extended based on the availability of additional funding.

Our programs aim to provide the community with the tools, knowledge, and resources to transform their lives and ultimately achieve their long-term educational, career, and financial goals. These holistic programs and services reach more than 10,000 individuals and families annually in five languages. Programs include early childhood education, youth mentorship and leadership development, employment services, career readiness training, housing and financial stability, senior citizen services, affordable housing and neighborhood development, and arts and cultural events. Our work expands beyond the Fruitvale district and now reaches across Oakland and into Contra Costa County. The Unity Council employs a diverse workforce of more than 300 people who reflect the linguistic, cultural, and ethnic identity of the communities we serve. 

Department Summary

The Community Programs department houses integrated educational, career, financial and housing services, aimed at removing barriers and providing resources to Oakland’s residents to stay on a path towards social equity. The Youth Achievement program includes our Latino Men and Boys (LMB) program and other youth initiatives that prepare youth of color to thrive educationally and in life. LMB is a school-based, culturally-rooted, educational support program for male identified Latino youth ages 12 to 19 years old in Oakland. The goals of the program are to support youth with high school transition and graduation, college and vocational readiness, health and wellness, and positive relationships. The LMB program connects youth and their families to needed services and resources.

Position Summary

The LMB Floater is a part-time, floating position that provides coverage across LMB school sites based on program needs and staff absences. When coverage is not required, the Specialist provides limited one-on-one student support, case management, classroom facilitation, and other program activities. The Specialist works closely with the LMB Program Manager and site staff to support a positive, culturally responsive, youth-centered environment and promote student engagement, wellness, and success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Provide coverage across LMB school sites during staff absences to maintain continuity of services.
• Facilitate LMB classes, restorative justice circles, activities, and existing lesson plans.
• Provide limited one-on-one student support, including check-ins, goal-setting, academic support, and referrals.
• Support positive classroom management and model accountability, respect, empathy, and other pro-social behaviors.
• Build positive relationships with students, school staff, and community partners.
• Use Salesforce to accurately track student participation, attendance, services, referrals, and other program data.
• Maintain accurate student notes and other required documentation.
• Support program events, field trips, workshops, and other youth development activities as needed.
• Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development.
• Communicate student, classroom, and site needs to the LMB Program Manager.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support program and staffing needs.

Qualifications

• Must be bilingual in Spanish and English.
• Must be able to travel to and from designated school site in Oakland.
• Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, public health, education, ethnic studies, or related field experience is preferred, but not required.
• 2 years of youth development, after school, and or para-professional experience can be substituted for BA degree.
• Multicultural competency in working with immigrant, newcomer, low income and diverse youth who face multiple barriers to success.
• Strong alignment with The Unity Council’s social equity values, mission and vision.
• Must have a passion for working with youth, mentoring young men, and community development.
• Must have ability to communicate effectively with administration, youth providers, youth and guardians.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able climb stairs, reach, bend, lift 20-30 pounds, crawl, kneel, stoop, twist, grasp materials with hands and fingers, use arms and legs, able to walk, climb ladders if applicable. 
• Regularly required to sit for long periods of time, and occasionally stand and walk; 
• Regularly required to use hands to operate computer and other office equipment; 
• Close vision required for computer use.
