Principal Laboratory Technician (2 Vacancies)

Position Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Principal Laboratory Technician within Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the Rutgers Cancer Institute. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Principal Laboratory Technician will support senior lab staff with conducting research experiments in the area of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. The Technician will maintain accurate records, order supplies, and conduct general maintenance of the lab. He or she will assist in intricate and complex cell‑based, animal, and human biospecimen experiments and prepare reagents. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform standard laboratory experiments: microscopy (light, fluorescent, or confocal); electrophoresis; PCR; Western blotting; flow cytometry of mouse and human specimens; DNA/RNA extraction; preparation of samples for ChIP‑seq, ATAC‑seq, RNA‑seq, and other multi‑omics approaches in collaboration with core facilities. Responsible for animal husbandry, administering medications to mice via oral, intraperitoneal, intravenous, or other routes, collecting specimens (blood, cerebrospinal fluid, organs), histology, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and biomarker analysis. Culture mammalian cell lines and conduct cell‑based in‑vitro assays. Order laboratory supplies and maintain a database of supply inventory. Responsible for packing, unpacking, storing, and classifying lab supplies and specimens (mouse and human). Prepare culture media, reagents, stains, and stock solutions. Assist the PI and senior laboratory staff with experimentation and research activities. Assist PI and senior lab staff in preparation of manuscripts and grant applications. Minimum Qualifications Associate's degree plus two (2) years of related research experience in a laboratory environment. Demonstrated ability to organize and maintain general laboratory functions, maintain accurate records, and follow laboratory safety guidelines and institutional policies. Must successfully complete mandatory lab safety/shipping training courses, as required by Rutgers Cancer Institute. Occasional overtime flexibility required. Effective oral and written communication skills. Computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. Preferred Qualifications Experience in animal (mouse) work, analytic techniques such as flow cytometry, biochemical assays, immunological assays, HPLC, mass spectrometry, and performing molecular and cancer cell biology experiments. Working knowledge of R Studio or other bioinformatics software is a plus but not required. Physical Demands Standing, sitting, walking, talking, hearing. No special vision requirements.
