Senior Counsel, Data Privacy, Cybersecurity and Consumer Compliance

The Role Reporting to our Vice President and Chief Privacy Officer, you will play a critical role in supporting our business and operations by independently managing compliance and contractual matters across the entire portfolio of New York Times digital products and back‑end platforms, focusing on data privacy, online safety, cybersecurity, advertising technology, subscription compliance, consumer protection, marketing laws, and accessibility. You will work closely with senior executives and cross‑functional teams, including consumer‑facing brand teams such as News, Games, The Athletic, Wirecutter, and Cooking, as well as Mission and Functions teams such as Growth, Marketing, Product Engineering, Data Platform, App Platforms, New AI Products, Cybersecurity, Human Resources, and Strategic Sourcing. You will report to the Vice President and Chief Data Privacy Officer within the Company’s Commercial Business and Legal Affairs group. Responsibilities Advise senior leadership and business‑wide teams on the development, collection, use, transfer, governance, and protection of sensitive data from domestic and international perspectives. Provide independent counsel in line with the Company’s goals and culture. Orchestrate risk and data protection impact assessments and records of processing with the data privacy analyst and relevant internal clients. Serve as the legal liaison to engineering for privacy tech and advertising tech management, covering data inventory, subject requests, and consent management. Participate in the core incident response team alongside cybersecurity and communications representatives to handle legal obligations. Develop, draft, and implement privacy, cybersecurity, subscription, marketing, advertising, and other consumer compliance processes, policies, and procedures; manage privacy policies, terms of use, and self‑regulatory notices across digital properties. Create data‑ and consumer‑protection–focused legal and compliance policies and procedures in coordination with Legal team members. Review, draft, and negotiate data provisions in commercial agreements. Advise on consumer protection laws, regulations, and best practices, including subscription matters such as renewals, cancellations, and price increases. Provide holistic risk advice considering emerging legal trends, past business practices, contracts, and public‑facing user interfaces. Offer legal advice during product development and releases. Manage the data privacy manager. Demonstrate support for journalistic independence and commitment to the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. Basic Qualifications Undergraduate and J.D. degrees from recognized institutions. Member of the New York bar. 10+ years of relevant experience in cybersecurity, data privacy, subscriptions, advertising technology, AI, and/or digital media. 3+ years of people‑management experience. Experience handling commercial and technology transactions involving data. 3+ years of in‑house experience. 2+ years of law firm experience. Ability to analyze complex legal and regulatory material and communicate implications in clear, concise language. Preferred Qualifications Experience as product counsel in a tech organization. Certification such as CIPP/US, CIPT, or CIPM. Benefits The annual base pay range is between $210,000 - $250,000 USD . For U.S. roles, variable pay may include an annual bonus and restricted stock.
