Position Highlights Work Hours: Full-Time, 40 hours per week Work Schedule: To be determined based on seniority Work Shift: To be determined based on seniority Office: CT State Community College Police Department Office Location: 185 Main Street, New Britain, CT 06051 About the Agency CT State Community College is a constituent unit of the Board of Regents for Higher Education (BOR), Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) and is the largest community college in NewEngland. Duty Overview Police officers protect, secure, and enforce laws on campus, exercising full police powers. Examples of Duties Security: Provide crowd control at events and activities. Monitor designated areas to ensure physical security and authorized access to prevent theft, trespass, vandalism, or violations. Give directions and routine information to the public. Participate in evacuation activities in the event of fire, bomb threats, or other potential disasters. Operate firefighting apparatus if needed. Conduct cruiser, foot, or bicycle patrols as appropriate. Protection: Provide traffic and/or crowd control. Assess further assistance needs and make arrangements. Gather background information and provide threat assessments regarding high‑risk locations or threats. Respond to emergencies and provide CPR or first aid. Transport or escort couriers with currency and prisoners or A.W.O.L. persons. Assist in searches for escaped patients or inmates. Assist State Police in investigations of major criminal acts. Maintain building security and perform patrol duties during heightened alert levels under Homeland Security procedures. Enforcement: Direct traffic and enforce motor vehicle and parking regulations. Initiate and conduct criminal investigations of violations, suspicious activity, or incident reports. Conduct on‑site investigations, question witnesses, arrest individuals at the scene, and issue summons. Administration: Record information, serve arrest warrants, and process paperwork on arrests and activity reports. Arrange surety and non‑surety bond payments or Written Promises to Appear. Provide court testimony. Conduct special programs, projects, and services as required. Process arrested individuals including determining charges, fingerprinting, photographing, initiating NCIC checks, searching, removing and inventorying personal belongings, and transporting arrested persons to lock‑up. Conduct safety training, certification, and/or recertification courses. Perform minor equipment repairs. Make public presentations regarding crime prevention and safety. Serve as dispatcher and perform related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of police and security practices and procedures, relevant state and federal laws, statutes, and regulations. Knowledge of traffic and crowd control practices and procedures. Knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. Substantial interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Ability to analyze emergency situations and develop effective courses of action. Proficiency in computer software. Minimum Qualifications – General Experience Certification as a law‑enforcement officer in the State of Connecticut pursuant to regulations from the Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council. Candidates with pending certification may be employed on a temporary basis pending re‑certification. Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed Successful completion of training and probationary requirements for the Protective Services Trainee class. Preferred Qualifications Preference will be given to applicants who have proven experience with community outreach and community engagement initiatives. Special Requirements Must be authorized to work lawfully in the United States by date of appointment. Must maintain certification and authority from the Commissioner of Emergency Services and Public Protection, including arrest powers under Connecticut statutes. Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license. May be required to obtain and retain Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. Must be eligible and qualified to bear arms. May be required to travel and accept assignments or transfers across the state. Must hold a Standard First Aid and CPR certificate and participate in required job‑related training. Must be willing to work flexible schedules, including possible 24‑hour on‑call duties. Character Requirements Thorough background investigation and reference checks will be conducted before certification for appointment. Physical Requirements Good general health and sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance, and visual and auditory acuity to perform all duties. Physical fitness assessment and medical examination (including controlled substance screening) will be required upon conditional offer. Must pass a swim test of 100 yards within four minutes. Working Conditions Incumbents may be exposed to unpleasant or dangerous situations, uncomfortable weather conditions, or confinement in a vehicle for prolonged periods.
