Position Highlights Schedule: Every Other Weekend Off Hours: Full‑time, 40 hours per week Available Shifts: First, Second and Third shift opportunities Hazardous Duty Locations (any facility or schedule may be assigned): Blue Hills Hospital – Hartford Capitol Region Mental Health Center – Hartford Connecticut Mental Health Center – New Haven Connecticut Valley Hospital – Middletown River Valley Services – Middletown Southwest Connecticut Mental Health System – Bridgeport Whiting Forensic Hospital – Middletown Responsibilities Maintain safety and security through active law‑enforcement within DMHAS facilities Protect clients, staff, and visitors, upholding standards of care and security Investigate incidents, enforce laws, and respond to emergencies Contribute to client well‑being and community safety within a recovery‑oriented health‑care setting Work collaboratively as an integral member of the Public Safety Division Examples of Duties Security: Provide crowd control at events and activities Monitor designated areas to ensure physical security and authorized access Give directions and routine information to the public Participate in evacuation activities for fire, bomb threats or other potential disasters Operate firefighting apparatus if needed Conduct cruiser, foot, or bicycle patrols as weather permits Protection: Provide traffic and/or crowd control Assess further assistance needed and make timely arrangements Conduct background information and threat assessments for high‑risk locations Respond to emergencies and provide CPR or first aid to injured parties Transport or escort couriers with currency, prisoners, or AWOL persons Assist in searching for escaped patients or inmates Assist State Police in investigations of major criminal acts Maintain building security and perform patrol duties under heightened alert levels per Homeland Security procedures Enforcement: Direct traffic and enforce motor‑vehicle and parking regulations Initiate and conduct criminal investigations of violations, suspicious activities or reported incidents Conduct on‑site investigations, question witnesses, arrest individuals at scene, and issue summons Administration: Record information, apply for and serve arrest warrants, and process paperwork on arrests and activity reports Arrange bond payments or Written Promises to Appear (WPA) Provide court testimony and conduct special programs, projects, and services as required Process arrested individuals, including determining charges, fingerprinting, photographing, and conducting NCIC checks Conduct safety training, certifications, recertifications, and minor equipment repairs Make public presentations on crime prevention and safety; serve as dispatcher if required Qualifications Certification as a law enforcement officer in the State of Connecticut pursuant to regulations promulgated by the Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council Successful completion of prescribed training and probationary requirements set forth in the class of Protective Services Trainee (substitutions allowed) Authorized to work lawfully in the United States by date of appointment Candidate must possess and maintain authority from the Commissioner of Emergency Services and Public Protection to arrest and present any person for any offense committed within the precinct Must maintain valid motorcycle operator’s license; may be required to obtain EMT certification and hold a valid firearm license Must be eligible and qualified to bear arms; may be required to travel and accept assignments in any region of the state Standard First Aid, CPR certificates required; may be required to undergo additional state‑specific training (e.g., swim test 100 yards within 4 minutes) Must maintain a valid Motor Vehicle operator’s license and be willing to work a flexible schedule Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of police and security practices, state and federal laws, traffic and crowd control, criminal law and court procedures Considerable interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills Ability to analyze emergency situations and develop effective courses of action; utilize computer software Physical and Working Conditions Must have general good health, free from conditions that impair health or usefulness Must possess sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance, and visual and auditory acuity to perform duties Physical fitness assessment required for all applicants May be exposed to unpleasant and/or dangerous situations; possible confinement within a vehicle for prolonged periods Affirmative Action / Equal Opportunity Employer The State of Connecticut is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and strongly encourages the applications of women, minorities, and persons with disabilities.
