Senior Project Engineer

The Senior Project Engineer will be responsible for the technical coordination, administration, and project controls of assigned heavy civil construction projects, working closely with the Project Manager, Assistant Project Manager, Superintendent, and other project personnel.

This position will lead and coordinate project engineering activities, including the interpretation of construction plans and specifications, management of RFIs and submittals, constructability reviews, procurement coordination, change order documentation, scheduling support, cost tracking, and quality control documentation. The Senior Project Engineer will serve as a key technical resource for the project team and will assist in ensuring construction activities are executed in accordance with contract requirements, approved plans and specifications, established schedules, and company standards.

The Senior Project Engineer will also provide guidance and mentorship to Project Engineers and Project Administrators, coordinate with design engineers and subcontractors, and proactively identify technical, schedule, and cost-related issues that may affect project performance.

This position requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, independent problem-solving, and the ability to manage multiple project priorities while maintaining a high degree of safety awareness and professionalism and upholding all company mission statement and values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Know, understand, and "live" the company's mission statement and values.
• Lead and coordinate project engineering activities from project startup through completion and final closeout.
• Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the prime contract, subcontract agreements, construction plans, specifications, approved drawings, and applicable general conditions.
• Review construction drawings and specifications to identify discrepancies, constructability concerns, coordination issues, and potential changes in scope.
• Coordinate with the Project Manager, Assistant Project Manager, and Superintendent to ensure project engineering activities support construction schedules, field operations, and overall project objectives.
• Prepare, review, and manage RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, technical documentation, and other required project correspondence.
• Coordinate with the owner's representative, design engineers, consultants, subcontractors, and suppliers to resolve technical issues and obtain timely responses to project inquiries.
• Maintain accurate and current project logs, including RFIs, submittals, change orders, procurement, drawing revisions, and other project documentation.
• Assist in the development, implementation, and updating of project schedules in coordination with project management and field supervision.
• Monitor long-lead procurement items, material deliveries, subcontractor submittals, and other activities that may impact the project schedule.
• Coordinate procurement activities, including preparation and tracking of purchase orders, subcontract agreements, material requisitions, and equipment requirements.
• Assist in reviewing subcontractor and supplier proposals, scope of work, technical qualifications, and project-specific requirements.
• Prepare and maintain detailed change order documentation, including quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, labor and equipment impacts, schedule impacts, and supporting documentation.
• Assist project management in evaluating potential changes to the work and identifying contractual, technical, and financial impacts.
• Perform and review quantity takeoffs, material calculations, production tracking, and other project engineering calculations necessary to support project execution.
• Assist in monitoring job costs, labor productivity, equipment utilization, and quantities installed. Identify discrepancies between estimated and actual production and communicate findings to project management.
• Prepare and review daily reports, quantity tracking, progress documentation, and other records necessary to support project controls and monthly billing.
• Assist in preparing owner payment applications, subcontractor payment reviews, and supporting documentation for completed work.
• Coordinate with the Superintendent and field personnel to ensure construction activities are performed in accordance with approved plans, specifications, and project quality requirements.
• Assist in developing and maintaining project-specific quality control documentation, inspection records, testing requirements, and deficiency tracking.
• Coordinate required material testing, inspections, survey requirements, and other technical field activities with the appropriate project personnel.
• Identify potential field conflicts, design discrepancies, and constructability issues and coordinate timely resolution with the project team.
• Provide technical support to field personnel regarding construction drawings, specifications, material requirements, and project execution.
• Maintain accurate as-built records and coordinate the preparation of record drawings and other closeout documentation.
• Support project management in the preparation and coordination of project closeout, including punch lists, operation and maintenance manuals, warranties, final inspections, and turnover documentation.
• Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to Project Engineers, Project Administrators, and other assigned project personnel.
• Assist in reviewing and coordinating project timecards, certified payroll documentation, and other labor compliance requirements as applicable.
• Ensure project engineering activities comply with company safety policies, the company Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), OSHA requirements, environmental regulations, and applicable air quality control requirements.
• Maintain a high degree of safety awareness when working in the office, visiting active construction sites, and coordinating field activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support successful project execution and company operations.

Qualifications and Expectations

• Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in the construction industry, preferably in heavy civil construction, renewable energy, water infrastructure, or power infrastructure projects.
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred. Equivalent practical construction experience may be considered.
• Demonstrated experience in project engineering, construction administration, project controls, and technical coordination on major construction projects.
• Strong ability to read, interpret, and understand construction plans, specifications, contracts, and technical documents.
• Thorough working knowledge of construction means and methods, construction sequencing, quantity tracking, and field operations.
• Experience preparing and managing RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, procurement logs, change orders, and other project documentation.
• Working experience in the development and maintenance of major project schedules using Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or equivalent industry-specific software.
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, Outlook, and other applicable company software.
• Experience with construction cost tracking, quantity takeoffs, productivity analysis, and project financial reporting.
• Knowledge of AIA contract forms, subcontract agreements, change order procedures, and general conditions associated with construction contracts.
• Familiarity with construction quality control requirements, material testing, inspection procedures, and project closeout documentation.
• OSHA 30-hour training preferred or willingness to obtain.
• Working knowledge of Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) requirements, environmental compliance, and applicable air quality control regulations.
• Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to independently manage assigned responsibilities, prioritize competing deadlines, and identify practical solutions to technical and operational challenges.
• Ability to work effectively with project management, field supervision, subcontractors, suppliers, design engineers, and other project stakeholders.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and be insurable.
• Knowledge of electrical power grid infrastructure and renewable energy construction is preferred.

Physical Abilities

Candidates must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of the position without hazard to themselves or others, including: sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods; bending, kneeling, and reaching to retrieve and file records; possessing sufficient dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office equipment; seeing to inspect financial or statistical records, review construction documents, and observe a computer monitor; and hearing and speaking at normal levels to communicate with others.

The position may require periodic visits to active construction sites, including walking on uneven terrain, climbing stairs or ladders, and wearing required personal protective equipment.

Salary Range: $100,000 – $120,000
