Job Description
The Phlebotomist III plays a key role in delivering high-quality laboratory services by performing complex specimen collection, handling, and processing in a fast-paced clinical environment. This role combines advanced phlebotomy skills with troubleshooting, training support, and workflow improvement recommendations to ensure accurate, timely, and safe laboratory operations.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and patient care.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture, blood draw, and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy prior to processing.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining specimen integrity at all times.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
- Package specimens securely and appropriately for transport according to protocol and regulatory requirements.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, following all protocols to preserve sample quality.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support safe and efficient laboratory operations.
- Update patient information accurately in laboratory systems and documentation as required.
- Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
- Follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols necessary for specimen transport and testing.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and compliance standards.
- Attend and participate in annual departmental trainings and ongoing education to maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.
- Answer telephone calls professionally and provide laboratory results or information to satisfy appropriate inquiries in accordance with policies.
- Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, or workflow and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency.
- Support the training of staff by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and best practices when needed.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- 5–7 years of overall experience, including substantial hands-on phlebotomy and specimen handling responsibilities.
- Proven proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture and blood draws.
- Demonstrated ability to use straight needles and butterfly needles safely and effectively.
- Strong attention to detail in labeling, matching requisitions to specimens, and verifying orders.
- Ability to collect, store, and process specimens according to strict procedures and protocols.
- Competence in updating patient information and recording maintenance and decontamination data accurately.
- Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to apply them in daily practice.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation, communication, and reporting.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Ability to clearly explain procedures to patients in a courteous and reassuring manner.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens and tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Capability to interpret and fully understand physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing.
- Experience centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens for transport.
- Comfort handling various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
- Effective verbal communication skills for answering telephone inquiries and relaying laboratory results in accordance with guidelines.
- Commitment to ongoing learning and participation in annual departmental trainings.
- Problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues and recommend workflow improvements.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a laboratory or hospital team.
This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment that emphasizes accuracy, safety, and patient-centered care. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment such as straight and butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, as well as computer systems for order entry, labeling, and results review. The position involves frequent interaction with patients, clinical staff, and other laboratory professionals, requiring clear communication and a professional demeanor. You will handle biological specimens, follow strict safety and infection-control protocols, and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations. Work hours may align with typical clinical or laboratory shifts and can include periods of standing, walking between collection areas, and performing repetitive tasks related to specimen collection and processing. Professional attire appropriate for a clinical laboratory setting is expected, along with adherence to any required personal protective equipment policies.

This is a Contract position based out of College Park, MD.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.
