Shady Grove Medical Center seeks to hire an experienced Director of Surgical Services who will embrace our mission to extend God’s care through the ministry of physical, mental and spiritual healing. The Director will report directly to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and is responsible for providing strategic leadership and administration in the areas of patient care, education, safety and quality in accordance with organizational policies and in accordance with standards of professional nursing practice, utilizing the framework for professional nursing practice and development. The Director will promote a professional practice environment and develop and maintain collegial and collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders across the institution to positively impact the business of clinical operations, nursing and patient care outcomes. These partnerships include ongoing collaboration with physician, facility and organizational leaders. Responsibilities include all aspects of clinical operations, clinician and patient/family education, customer service, patient safety, financial outcomes, and quality outcome management and regulatory compliance. As a Director of Surgical Services, you will: • Establish strategic plan, provide resources and has a clear vision for specialty/service line. • Collaborate with administrators, physicians, managers and other providers to facilitate planning, implementation, and evaluation of strategic plan and initiatives. • Collaborate with leadership to create an operational plan consistent with the program’s strategic plan. • Ensure unit/department-based goals and objectives are consistent with the overall direction of the program and the overall hospital plan. • Guide priorities and focus of work for activities of the program and organization. • Link inpatient and outpatient plans to promote coordination of care across the continuum and to promote operational efficiency. • Facilitate/collaborate in the development of program and business plans to address newly identified patient care needs. • Develop annual and multiyear capital budget. • Develop annual operational budget to support strategic plan. • Establish productivity targets with managerial personnel. • Hold nurse leaders & support staff accountable • Be an integral part of the senior leadership team, representing their service/specialty at all levels of the organization • Maintain membership in at least one professional organization, participating on key practice issues, when able. • Maintain all licensure, required certifications, required mandatory education. Role model – does not let these requirements expire. • Promote future leader development • Promote cohesive work teams and constructive conflict resolution, actively supporting intra-and inter-disciplinary teamwork, within the department and organization. • Model behavior that invites colleague interaction and demonstrates mutuality. • Communicate in a manner which is open, clear, respectful and consistent. • Invite feedback and acknowledges contribution of others. • Encourage staff to provide input and make decisions to improve patient and family care and the work environment. • Identify issues to the Chief Nursing Officer and takes an active role in leading the process improvement initiative to address opportunities for improvement. • Collaborate with other departments in a professional manner as needed to provide patient-centered care • Model collaborative behaviors which facilitate achievement of department and program goals. • Strategically establish linkages with other key departments which facilitate the goals of patient care delivery. • Handle conflicts in a dignified and respectful manner. • Conduct purposeful counseling/coaching sessions with direct reports for purposes of professional development (i.e., percent of performance appraisals done in a timely fashion, one-to-one standing meetings). • Model & encourage professional practice that includes nurse autonomy, authority, accountability and responsibility within the department. • Advocate for and assures colleagues attendance to and participation in professional development activities. • Participate actively in leadership forums such as nursing leadership, team building exercises, organization wide efforts such as department/section manager activities, etc. • Support organizational efforts of establishing and maintaining relationships with communities, benefactors and other employees. • Support organizational values by recognizing employees in written and verbal modes. • Honor diversity. • Provide leadership for strengthening the professional role of the disciplines. • Ensure that clinical practice models are deployed. • Promote outcome focused and customer centered care. • Articulate expectations of clinical performance. • Provide guidance to managers regarding practice issues and resource utilization. • Participate and encourage others to participate in professional research presentations and review of published findings. • Provide leadership for evidence-based practice initiatives. • Serve as a resource to other departments on practice issues and trends. • Oversee development & implementation of care delivery model, establishes clear expectations based on standards of care defined by their professional & regulatory organizations • Provide leadership/consultation in the implementation, evaluation and modification of care coordination/case management. • Facilitate multidisciplinary performance improvement committees to develop evidence based practice and monitor variances. • Provide communication and education opportunities that support and promote care coordination and care management strategies. • Build partnerships that support and promote care coordination and care management strategies (i.e., physicians, home care agencies, long-term care centers, insurers, etc.). • Advocate for resources for safe delivery of patient care for labor, equipment & facilities in specialty areas with a global perspective • Execute successfully the established plans and the services through measurement, monitoring, analysis, reporting, and adjusting the direction, allocation and utilization of available resources. • Collaborate with CNO/COO to support program/practice changes to continually improve resource utilization. • Provide report of budget analysis to CNO/COO monthly. • Role model positive customer service behaviors • Consistent application and deployment of the Mission in Motion principles (AIDET, purposeful rounding, huddles, bedside shift reports, 10/5 rule, etc.) • Drive and model behaviors that contribute to the successful accomplishment of Key Result Areas (KRA) goals • Support professional practice environment that includes nurse autonomy, authority, accountability and responsibility Qualifications include: • Master’s degree or within 2 years of hire into position • Certification in leadership or nursing administration within 1 year of hire into position • Degree in nursing (BSN or MSN) • Actively participate in professional organizations; • 8 years as RN including 3 years as a nurse leader in the specialty area ; exp. in systems level leadership • Current Maryland State nursing license • Active American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required • Must be able to analyze written, spoken, visual and other sensory stimuli. • Must have ability to analyze written and spoken English. • Must be able to cope effectively with stressful situations and time constraints. • Must be able to interpret scientific data in a logical and coherent manner. • Must be able to logically solve problems. • Must be able to follow detailed written and verbal instructions. • Must direct and manage others. • Must be able to work well with others.
