Registered Nurse (RN)

Located in a vibrant city in the state, this facility is a 388-bed hospital serving as a Level 3 Trauma Center and housing a Level 3 NICU.

The unit has 24 beds, including 8 behavioral health rooms within a locked unit.

Patient types include psychiatric patients, trauma cases, general medical conditions, sepsis, cardiac issues, stroke patients, abdominal and chest pain.

The typical ratio is 1 Registered Nurse (RN) to 4-5 patients, with a maximum of 1:6 for low-acuity patients.

Required certifications include BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) or ENPC, NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale), MOAB/CPI (Management of Aggressive Behavior/ Crisis Prevention Intervention), TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) or ATCN (Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses).

Skills required include RSI (Rapid Sequence Intubation), conscious sedation, management of lines, drains, and tubes, general Emergency Room skills, and experience with EPIC EMR is required for preceptors and traditional travelers.

Support on the unit includes CNA/ER Tech: 2-4 techs available, depending on the shift, Receptionist/HUC available around the clock, Resource Nurse present, Respiratory Therapy available 24/7, Hospitalists available at all times, and Telemetry monitoring: bedside and centralized.

Orientation includes 1 week of general orientation followed by 24 weeks of unit-oriented training for new nurse graduates, NEO with 1-2 shifts with a preceptor, 2-3 weeks on the unit for preceptor orientation, and NEO with 1-2 shifts on the unit for traditional travelers.

Scheduling includes weekend rotation required every other weekend, holiday expectations as needed based on unit requirements, time-off requests must be submitted 7 days in advance; additional time-off requires management approval, and shift times for preceptors: straight days or nights, with the last 4-6 weeks potentially on the opposite shift. Traditional traveler shift times can vary between 0700 and 1900 hours.

Other notes include utilizing a 1:1 model for Comprehensive Assessment Program (CAP), scrub colors: solid/dress professional colors are permitted, free parking available for all staff, and the unit fosters a culture of teamwork, although it can be a stressful environment. There is a strong emphasis on support for new graduate nurses.
