Job Title: Lathe Machinist (CNC and Manual) Job Description

This role focuses on operating and setting up CNC and manual lathes to produce precision metal components to exact specifications. You will interpret engineering drawings, perform machine setups, monitor machining operations, and verify that finished parts meet strict dimensional and quality requirements. The position offers opportunities for machinists from Level 1 through Level 3+ to work with a variety of modern equipment in a clean machine shop environment.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints to determine machining requirements.

• Start up and observe machine operations to ensure proper function and adherence to specifications.

• Calculate and set machine controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, and depth of cut.

• Perform process offset changes independently to maintain part accuracy and quality.

• Set up your own jobs, including loading tools, loading parts, and running the first part to verify setup.

• Adjust CNC programs as required to achieve desired dimensions and surface finishes.

• Operate CNC and manual lathes, including models such as NLX3000, NLX4000, NZX2000, Hitachi machines, Haas TL-2, and manual lathes.

• Load parts and perform machine operations appropriate to your level, from basic loading at Level 1 to complex setups on mills or lathes at Level 3+.

• Use micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring instruments to check parts during and after machining.

• Verify conformance of completed work to specifications, tolerances, and quality standards.

• Work with close tolerances, including thousandths of an inch, to produce high-precision components.

• Apply knowledge of GD&T and G-codes when setting up and running CNC machines.

• Operate mills and multi-axis CNC equipment (3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis) as needed to support production.

• Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow established safety and operational procedures.

Essential Skills

• Extensive machine shop and metalworking skills, including experience with CNC and manual equipment.

• Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and blueprints.

• Proficiency in working with decimals and performing basic shop math.

• Comfort working with close tolerances, including thousandths of an inch.

• Ability to set up your own jobs and successfully run the first part.

• Ability to adjust CNC programs when required to meet specifications.

• Experience operating CNC lathes and mills, including loading parts and performing setups appropriate to Level 1 through Level 3+.

• Hands-on experience with 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis CNC machines.

• Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).

• Familiarity with G-codes for CNC programming and operation.

• Proficient use of precision measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers.

• Experience operating equipment such as Haas machines and similar CNC platforms.

• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a production environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience operating specific CNC lathe models such as NLX3000, NLX4000, NZX2000, and Hitachi lathes.

• Experience operating Haas TL-2 and manual lathes.

• Background in both lathe and mill machining, including machine operating in a production environment.

• Familiarity with a range of CNC machining levels, from basic loading operations to complex setups.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precise parts.

• Ability to troubleshoot machining issues and make effective adjustments on the fly.

Work Environment

This role is based in a clean machine shop environment with modern CNC and manual lathes, mills, and multi-axis equipment. The day shift runs Monday through Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All shifts train on days, with flexibility to train on the assigned shift for higher-level candidates as needed. The swing shift operates Monday through Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. and includes a 10% shift differential. The weekend shift runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., also with a 10% differential. You will work with equipment such as NLX and NZX series lathes, Hitachi machines, Haas TL-2, manual lathes, and multi-axis CNC machines, using precision measuring tools like calipers and micrometers in a structured, production-focused setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tualatin, OR.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $42.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
